According to James 2:21-24, Abraham was not justified by faith only. James says that works played a part in his justification BUT they were certainly not the works of the (at that time nonexistent) Law nor of merit - they were works of obedience to Christ by faith (which are wholly different). To deny this is to say that the Bible contradicts itself...unless you choose to hold the heresy of Luther that James is the "epistle of straw."
Eccl.3:19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.
21 Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
22 Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?
---Now these verses have nothing to do with the topic at hand but serve as an illustration.
According to these verses, most cults say that you cannot prove dogmatically that there is eternal punishment like Hell, or even Heaven for that fact. In fact, these verses simply teach that in the end we are all going to die, be buried, turn to dust, and that's it. Who knows if there is a heaven or hell. Eat, drink, and be merry. You have nothing to lose. The cults love this. Of course that's not what it is really teaching, and you won't understand what it is teaching unless you understand these verses in the context of the entire Book of Ecclesiastes.
James 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
---The cults love these verses also. They say these verses teach that one is justified by works. Just as Ecclesiastes teaches there is no Hell or Heaven, these verses teach that one is saved by their works. That's pretty plain isn't it. Of course that's not what these verses are really teaching, and any serious student of the Bible knows that for the Bible does not contradict itself. The verses must be taken in the context of the entire Book of James. But that's just tooo difficult for some people. Believe what you want. I can't help you. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
