What To Think About J.D. Greear?

Greear was elected in 2018 by Calvinists plus a number of messengers who were snookered by the "JD deserves the Presidency for conceding to Gaines in 2016" line.

The Calvinism thing was bigger in the 2016 matchup between Greear and Gaines; recall that there was much hand wringing when neither got a majority in the second, runoff ballot. JD conceded rather than risk losing on a third ballot, and was promptly anointed to succeed Gaines in 2018.

The Founders faction of Calvinists only recently wised up to Greear. Check out the supportive tweet from Tom Ascol's Founders lieutenant Jared Longshore in 2016 [he's probably kicking himself now]:

"5 less @jdgreear votes and there would be no runoff 2morrow. Glad my wife made it back from the popcorn line. #SBC16"

Greear's policies are not much account. I stand for the abolition of the ERLC. I admire Dr. Land and I disadmire Russell Moore. We should fight sin, death and Hell until the very end.

Its not hard to "snooker" a lot of SBC pastors. They chase the"rock stars" of the convention around like teenage girls chasing Justin Bieber.

I need to start attending the annual meetings. 2020 won't be possible, but after that I need to make the effort.

Well. I specifically said I did not want the discussion to become about Calvinism, but The Calvinists put J.D. into power.
Why? They cared more about Calvinism and having a Calvinist as president than they cared about having a conservative in power. The information proving J.D. to be liberal was available they ignored it because they wanted a Calvinist as Prez.

So call them out, who are these Calvinists you refer to? Call out people.

All the beards on the floor that voted. You have to go back to the floor of 2016 convention. Cals Cals backed Greear, non cals backed Gaines. Deal cut to avoid a third vote set J D. up to be next president.

Didn't D.A. Carson also come out on the side of gender-neutral "Bibles"?
If I remember correctly there was some debate between D. A. Carson & Mark Strauss on one side and Vern Poythress & Wayne Grudem on the other side -- in which Carson & Strauss came down on the gender-neutral side. While I disagree with them, it is well to note, as David mentions, that this is a slightly different issue from what is in this thread.

I see this as broader problems of safeguarding the church against pop psychology masquerading as Christian theology, of preventing any hint of insidious charismatic influences in a time where the Pentecostal/Charismatics are becoming mainstream, and the general need to safeguard the SBC against cultural and theological drift to a Progressive understanding of things.

Again, I gave up the fight for the soul of the SBC. It may be best to schism at this point. I jumped ship to the IFB churches and feel wonderful.

Psychology and sociology have trumped theology in most Southern Baptist pulpits for the last 60 years.

I think the real problem is what used to be called "seeker sensitive." Not sure what in the world they call it now. We have forgotten that the purpose of the gathering of the church is to equip the saints, not to attract the lost. That is what we are sent out to do. We are sent out to evangelize. We gather to worship. I think the church (general) would do a lot to get back to that basic fact.

That accurately summarizes the problem.

I agree wholeheartedly. Two apologists I follow still call it "seeker sensitive." Sunday morning church service is the weakest part of the whole week for your average church in terms of building up the saints. I used to get far more in depth building up the other events of the week.

Nowadays I am limited to Sunday evening service due to money woes. I like it though since it has such in depth bible study that I need right now. I plan to expand my participation from there.

My only other major issue with most churches beyond "seeker sensitive" and Charismatic influences may in fact be spurred on by attracting "seekers": a lack of church discipline at most congregations. One church I went to had a couple of members that everyone knew believed in reincarnation as animals. No church discipline at all.
