Part of me can't help but think it's a ploy to sell more Bibles!
Have you found many instances where what the Greek intended and the NLT translated differed?
Language evolves. To paraphrase the book davidtaylorjr's and rlvaughn's suggested book Authorized said, at what point do you update a Bible translation before it becomes the next Vulgate?
Small changes over a long period of time is more manageable and better for the audience than sudden and massive changes over a very short period of time. People are unlikely to buy a new Bible simply because the translation changed a few words and most online Bibles are free.
This "it's a ploy to sell more Bibles" is simply slander and not supported by the facts.
It depends on the belief's of those who translated the passage sometimes.
Revelation 13:8 NLT
And all the people who belong to this world worshiped the beast. They are the ones whose names were not written in the Book of Life that belongs to the Lamb who was slaughtered before the world was made.
Now, the NLT translation notes also lists "They are the ones whose names were not written in the Book of Life before the world was made - the Book that belongs to the Lamb who was slaughtered."
However, I would use the word "since" instead of "before". It is a difficult passage to translate.

However, my beliefs are in the minority in this forum and many would agree with the NLT translation over my own.
Regardless, I don't base my theology and daily living on proof-texts. I usually read the Bible as a whole and within context. The NLT really helps in this regard. One can look at the Democrat proof-texts to see just how wrong "proof-texts" can steer you.
With the continuing development of CBGM and textual discoveries, myself and probably hundreds of students, pastors and professors encouraged crossway to not follow through with the "permanent text". They listened to to reason.

That was my profession showing! (I work in marketing for a book publisher.)
I normally don't like to talk about my work, especially in this setting, but I felt compelled in this case to reveal that to you.
In any case, I was being brutally honest about my thoughts, but now regret having revealed them!
But enough of that. Suffice it to say, I apologize if I offended anyone with my brief, but honest, remark.

Yes, and Thomas Nelson Publishers did excellent job with center column references and concise marginal notes.

If I may ask, I'm just curious as to why you prefer the ASV over, for example, the KJV.
It's just that I'm so used to hearing KJV that's it's refreshing to encounter someone who prefers the ASV, instead!
I think that he means the 1901 edition, thatwas the basis for the Nas later on!
Is this the 1901 Asv then?

Because of the excellent references and marginal notes of the Thomas Nelson hard copy. There's some translation issues where I very much prefer KJV over the ASV. One big area being the debate between 'faith of Christ' vs. 'faith in Christ'.
