I find it quite interesting that there is a growing movement here in America that shows illegal's who speak Spanish prefer to not now, or never, learn English as well as speak it! So...do you have a problem with people who speak languages other than Spanish? There's no "official" language in the US. Are your ancestors native English speakers? In many large cities, there used to be different ethnic neighborhoods where everyone spoke something other than English...was there a problem then or is it just Spanish speakers? Is it a problem that most US citizens refuse to learn a second language unlike most of the rest of the world?

Yes, the language changed some over time.... It is still English. The generic terms you called me were just as in use back then as now. So when you call me "narrow-minded arrogant, ugly American" any person back then would understand what you meant.

Requiring a language of commonality is pretty common sense. Lets look at the Mexican requirements for citizenship. What, they require you to learn the language and basic history of the country. I guess that includes their brief bout with communism during the early 1910s.

The problem is that a baby born on US soil is a US citizen. You cannot deport a citizen. If the parents are deported what do you do with the baby?

I would issue a temporary resident visa (green card) and give the parents two years to prove themselves. The dad would be gainfully employed and the mom would not apply for any welfare of assistance with the exception of Medicaid for the baby.

If, after two years the parents have not been a burden on the system and have been self supporting I would issue a permanent resident visa (green card).

We can protect our borders without putting our infant citizens at risk.

Your points are EXACTLY why we need to stop the anchor baby law, so, we can remove the entire family!

As for giving them two years, that is a good suggestion, still, they need to go, and if they have a baby or child, that goes too! They need to take everything they added to their closet since coming here. Once they return to their homeland, they can apply, and maybe given priority to be considered for citizenship, but, not at the expense of those who are waiting and have waited for a long time to come her!

Man, you liberals would give away the country if we allowed all those who came here illegally a shot at citizenship! Why should an honest person be held to the law, and the cheaters given precedence. Makes no sense when it comes to the letter of the law!

When my family came to this country from Europe, most spoke their native language (not English). But they soon learned that they had to work and do business with English speakers as well as other Europeans living here. So they made it a point to learn English and have the kids learn it...after all, English is the language of the USA, these people's adopted home....so they all wanted to speak it.

So what has happened to America where people choose not to speak English? Not only I but my grandparents would disapprove.

We currently live in South Florida. The Hispanics typically tend to segregate themselves and have no need to speak English.

It will sort itself out in a generation or two.

There's a roadside "carbon" that's always packed here. About 2/3 Hispanic and 1/3 white. You have to order in Spanish. Fortunately, I know enough Spanish from having lived in Texas and from two semesters in college.

We went to the Phillies-Marlins' game in Miami yesterday and there's a very nice Cuban lady who lives across the street who will let you park in her yard for $10 (literally, across the street. The handicapped parking is about two blocks away, but I can stand in her front yard and hit the stadium with a rock). We had a lot of fun together. She helped me with my Spanish and I helped her with her English. We actually may go back just to visit with her.

Yes, it does annoy me when people come here and don't try to assimilate or learn the language, but, overall, I really like my Hispanic neighbors.

I was dressed down by an elderly man in Valencia, Spain telling me that if I was going to live in Spain I should learn Spanish. He had mistaken me for a Brit. Many retired Brits have moved to Spain and live in English speaking ghettos. I agreed with the man. If I lived in Spain then I should learn Spanish.

The other side of that coin is that here in the States it is wise to learn Spanish or another foreign language. If you have young kids or grandchildren it will open many doors if they learn Mandarin Chinese ... as well as Spanish.
