You become a Glutton, a drunk, a bulimic, a miser, a spendthrift,etc because you choose to be. Nobody is impelling or compelling anyone. You may delude yourself to believing that this is so, but it is not. The same wind which blows a ship on the rocks could blow it to safe harbor. In short, it is not the wind, it is the set of the sail. Any Person who denies that is a weakling who wishes to blame others for their life.

My father used to tell me this when I was a small boy, "Remember this surely: The Recording Angel will not accept your excuse that others made you what you are, and that you are blameless. I never forgot that."

 

You are not in sin by working where you work. If you do not like it find another job but do not stress over, and do not judge yourself.

 

Ive seen sober individuals beat & kill their spouses (both sexes). & I have seen tons of car accidents due to people using cell phones while driving. Big deal. And I agree, those who cant control themselves should never use any substance & not even drive a car if they are going to get into it & not pay strict attention to the road. But your never going to stop a stupid person from doing dumb things so whats your point?

If you're not a teetotaler and you enjoy some hard lemonade on occasion, then what bothers you about your job?
Somebody had to ship that lemonade to the store you bought it from didn't they?

 

Somebody had to ship it to that drunk who got behind the wheel of that car and killed that little child...

Given your past positions on mental illness, you'd probably equate doctors with crack pushers.

 

I don't know that anyone has said that. But drinking certainly isn't seen to equal holiness.

I'm just picturing Irish Catholic priests in Boston sitting down to have a beer with the other Catholics.

Is it okay to also smoke a little marijuana from time to time? So many folks today don't have a problem with the use of it.

 

That would be a wise decision. Aiding in the shipment of a drug that is responsible for more than 1000 youths dying each year at the hands of a drunk driver really doesn't do anything to polish the Christian character.

 

First off...I have to point out that hell has literally frozen over. I am in agreement with Webdog. I've already made the appointment to see the doctor. (JK).

Anyway...

For those of you who decry any use of alcohol at all, what do you do with this:

“You shall tithe all the yield of your seed that comes from the field year by year. 23 And before the Lord your God, in the place that he will choose, to make his name dwell there, you shall eat the tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and flock, that you may learn to fear the Lord your God always. 24 And if the way is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, when the Lord your God blesses you, because the place is too far from you, which the Lord your God chooses, to set his name there, 25 then you shall turn it into money and bind up the money in your hand and go to the place that the Lord your God chooses 26 and spend the money for whatever you desire—oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink, whatever your appetite craves. The Israelites were commanded to spend money on whatever their appetites craved--even wine or strong drink. And, the consumption of food, wine, and strong drink was seen, as the text clearly says, as an act of worship (which is the meaning of the idiom "before the Lord").

Of course, drunkenness is never condoned. However, drinking is invited, and even encouraged by God.

I do not condone drinking. However, I do not think the church can discipline its members for drinking, only drunkenness.

Some of the examples given here are, frankly, silly. And, as is often the case, the "indoctrinated" views are brought to the fore, not the scriptural ones.
