I can go along with the snakes and scorpions representing how God will supernatually protect us! He protects us from a lot of things! But I will not go along with Him telling us to taking up snakes literally!

I do believe there is a deeper meaning the serpents mentioned in Mark and Luke..as I have said before...
The devil decieved Eve through the snake which resulted in the fall of man as a curse that was passed down. When it says believers “can pick up snakes and if they drink any deadly poison it will not hurt you.” It could mean..... believers having discernment on what is true and what are lies. The devil can feeds us poison with a lie...but we are given the gift of discernment. We should know the truth. As a believer we can defeat the devil (snake) by the Sword of the Spirit. (Word of God) This again comes from the Power of the Holy Spirit.

Do you know of an example of anyone taking literal poison in the Bible and not dying?

Funny how every example of someone getting baptized in the Holy Spirit manifest the Holy Spirit...most of the time it is tongues! But when someone receives the indwelling Holy Spirit...there is no manifestation!

This is another thread...so if you want to discuss it more you can PM me or open another thread!

And such an interpretation is ridiculous. There is no indication that neither Jesus nor the disciples would have been thinking about that when he said those words or when they heard those words. Context is key. Why read more into the passage then what is there?
No, not at all. The Bible speaks of such things elsewhere. There is no reason to think that he would be speaking of it here.
    A poisonous lie??
How about a deceptive lie, or a snarky lie? or (as in the case of Eve) a subtle lie, a white lie, a mortal lie, a venial lie, a little lie, a cancerous lie, etc. Why do you choose "poisonous lie"? Only because it fits a warped Charismatic theology! There are many adjectives one could put in front of lie, all making sense.
The Bible doesn't have to record every single event of the disciple just to prove what happened to the disciples. Yes, they probably did. Timothy either drank something that they would consider poisonous at that day, or we would consider contaminated. It gave him "an ailment in his stomach and "oft infirmities" or "many other infirmities." They didn't always have the safest drinking water nor the quickest remedies. Sometimes things like that were downright poisonous. Water can get poisoned very quickly. In Moses time the water was poisoned. It was called "bitter" or Mara. Not until Moses had a certain tree cast into the water did was the poison neutralized. This was all according to the hand of God. And so it is according to the hand of Christ in the NT with the apostles.

Another observation in this study is that Jesus crushed the head of the serpent!

But didn't you see jesus as being the brazen serpent in the wilderness, and so was he crushing his own head here then?

That is not an observation that comes from the OP and has nothing to do with the OP. Why all the red herrings? Read Luke 10 and address the context!

The serpent is not Jesus! It represents our sins judged! The serpent was lifted up just as Jesus was lifted on the cross and took our sins!

This thread is about the power to tread serpents! Jesus crushed the serpents head!

I have already discussed Luke 10 IN CONTEXT! He mentions the serpents in the same sentence he says "all the power of satan"...

The OP (Opening Post) says this:
This thread obviously is not about Jesus crushing the serpent's head. Stick to the OP, and not all your red herrings.

We have to search out all the scriptures speaking of serpents to have a complete understanding of it! Why do you not want to go deeper...afraid it will disprove your interpretation?

the problem though is that when you get 'deeper' into the meaning of the text, the results are NOT what the HS would show you, but some other meaning never intended by God!

Many stories in the Bible have a practical application for believers today.

If we look at Joshua 9:12-13, representatives were sent to see Joshua. During their journey they encountered heat, poison serpents, scorpions, dry places with no water, and open land without shade trees. THe same is true with believers who seek after Christ. We experience fiery trials and verbal "bites" from people being influienced by the enemy, and at times we walk by faith through dry places where our spiritual perception is dull and a refreshing from the Holy Spirit is missing.

We can always find a spiritual application in His Word! But most of us get tripped up on the letter of the law and ignore the spirit of the law. There needs to be a balance.

But we are not looking for spiritual applications. We are looking at what the text says. The text does not give spiritual applications. The text gives only one meaning. If the text says they shall pick up serpents and they shall not harm them, then that is what it means. Spiritual applications can be made by others, but an application is not what the text says.

There is one and only one interpretation; but many applications.
We must find the one interpretation.
You can make your personal applications later.

    That is not true.
There is only one interpretation of that text.
The context gives us the interpretation of that text, not other stories in the Bible. That is why you are so confused. In fact you come up with downright heresy comparing Christ to a Pharisee, to sin, and so much the more by your method of allegorical interpretation. It is wrong. You have even denied salvation by doing so.

The devil used this line of reasoning when he tempted Jesus in the wilderness. "Jump.. the scripture says the angels will bear you up....." Still being used to tempt God today. "Pick up the snake... drink some poison.." etc. Using the devil's craftiness.

You might not be looking for spiritual application! But I am! The Bible is a spiritual book!

Yes, It was a very spiritual book to this woman also who used the same method of interpretation as you do as she flipped through her Bible turning from one verse to another. Here is what her Bible told her in reference to the will of God:

Judas went out and hung himself.
    Go and do thou likewise.
    What thou doest do quickly.
He that loves me keeps my commandments.

Yes, a spiritual book with spiritual applications. She was looking for the will of God. Do you think she found it? Is it the right spiritual application? This is your method of Bible study and application!!

True, bu the HS is not into giving us exotic interprtations from it!

take the intended plainand literal truth written for us to receive, unless the genre and context allows us to have another meaningas to what was intended by God it meaning!

    What same old tactics.
That is your method of interpretation.
Pull Scripture together from other contexts and put them together.
I just gave you an example of how it is done.
Why do you reject it. It is exactly what you do.
