    Elements of Bible Translation

First of all, consider semantics, often defined as "the study of meaning." A word can be either monosemous (one meaning) or polysemous (various meanings). Let's say you decide a word in the source language is monosemous. You're not done. Questions to ask include: Is there an equivalent word in...

    Elements of Bible Translation

By this title I mean things that a Bible translator must know or check or learn in order to do the best possible Bible translation. Sure, anyone who knows a source language and a target language, both, can do a Bible translation, but it may turn out to be extremely literal (Ulphilas in the 4th...

    Ambiguous Word create confusion.

Odd how some amateurs believe that translation is simply a matter of looking the word up in a lexicon, then choosing a word they like in the target language. (Never mind the grammar, syntax, cultural connections, idioms, etc., etc.) Reminds of the story related by Eugene Nida about one such...

    Ambiguous Word create confusion.

Looking back through Van's posts I see that he is conflating ambiguities in the original language with ambiguous renderings. (Okay, I peeked at Van's posts though I have him on ignore. So sue me! :p But I certainly have no desire to interact with his insulting self, so there. :Biggrin) My...

    Ambiguous Word create confusion.

These stories illustrates a recent development in Bible translation. In many cases nowadays, the translation team consists all of nationals, even the leadership. The missionary is then the trainer and the translation consultant. The team is thus able to do a better job than a missionary...

    Ambiguous Word create confusion.

I appreciate your kind words. I'll share a little more. A. is a young man who graduated with our MA in Bible Translation. He is currently on deputation to raise support for working with the Madi tribe in Africa. He has already been there several extended periods to help the native translators...

    Ambiguous Word create confusion.

I am so blessed this morning! In chapel, we had a presentation by our translation team who went to Mexico and visited three tribal translation efforts in two weeks. I was in tears at one point. The team consisted of: 1.Miss B., our linguistics prof. She speaks seven languages, and has an MA in...

    Ambiguous Word create confusion.

Note that it is not always possible to translate ambiguity with ambiguity. For example, anothen (ἀνοθεν) in Luke 1:3, "from the very first," can also be translated, "from above" or "again." There is no way to preserve the ambiguity of the original in this case. The translator must choose one or...

    Ambiguous Word create confusion.

To everyone other than Van, if you are familiar with dynamic equivalence (also called functional equivalence) translating ambiguity with certainty is a DE principle "It is this approach [idiomatic translation--JoJ] That reduces ambiguity and obscurity to a minimum...." (Beekman and Callow...

    Ambiguous Word create confusion.

Wow, insulting much. This is so typical of you. "Sloppy. unstudied translation choices" indeed. Yet according to what you have said before, you have never translated, don't know the original languages of the Bible, and do not know any other languages. (To interested parties other than Van, I am...

    Ambiguous Word create confusion.

The Greek word was used for much more that "the dying of garments." In fact, that "dying garments" is bapto (βάπτω), not baptizo (βαπτίζω). Also, the two passages you mention are metaphorical usages of baptizo.

    Ambiguous Word create confusion.

Absolutely, yes. God has put ambiguous words and passages in Scripture to make us think. He wants us to be thinking believers, not automatons or robots.

    War with China?

Yeah. Remember back in the day when everyone was worried about Japan taking over the US financially? They were going to buy up most of the US and kind of become our rulers. That was a failure! Deja vu! :Biggrin

    War with China?

Yeah, I read something about those men coming over the border. Old Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times."

Baptist Bible College (Springfield, Mo.) has changed its name

So, their student body is decreasing, and they decide to change the school's name and spend 100,000 on signage instead of finding out why. And then they decide they are a university instead of just a college? Apparently the examples in recent fundamentalist history of this road leading to...

    War with China?

I rarely post here in the politics section of the BB, but yesterday a Chinese student of mine shared something interesting. His father (still in China and recently saved, but a member of the CCP) pointed out that war with us or Taiwan (same thing) is not on the table because the Chinese economy...

    There Are Only Nine Commandments

As one who has lived in an idolatrous Buddhist culture for many years, making vv. 2-6 into one commandment does not make sense to me. The reason is that making an idol and worshipping an idol are two separate acts. One can make an idol but not worship it, thus perpetuating idol worship, and that...
