    What makes you a Baptist?

Hopefully this is an interesting and enlightening thread. So, what makes you a Baptist? As for me, I hold to all of the "Baptist Distinctives". I have tried to fit in elsewhere, for various reasons, but I have found it very difficult to give up any of the Baptist distinctives.

    Were Calvin and Luther 'saved'?

Since Calvin and Luther were directly responsible for the murder of thousands of Christians, in that sense they were indeed mass murderers. I don't idealize the Anabaptists or the Baptists or the Quakers. But while the Protestants and Catholics were professing Jesus while their churches were...

    Healing and miracles

I can't say it better than Ascetic X did in his reply to you.

    Problem with church attendance

Nobody wants to do that either.

    Problem with church attendance

Sounds like you've got a good church there. I'm 70 -- it kind of sneaked up on me. :) When I was young, we had 'BTU' on Sunday night -- Baptist Training Union, a kind of night Sunday School, and then a worship service. BTU faded away some years ago. I miss those days. I think the reason...

    Problem with church attendance

That would be the ideal for me, too. Before Covid, almost all Baptist churches around here that I knew of, as well as Charismatic/Pentecostal, and Church of the Nazarene had Sunday morning and Sunday night worship services, and Wednesday night Bible study. But now, many of those churches only...

    Problem with church attendance

For reasons I won't go into, I can only attend evening church services. The only churches in this area that have evening services are Baptist, RC, and Charismatic/Pentecostal. However, since Covid, many churches have ceased their evening services. I have only gone to church one time since Covid...

    Healing and miracles

True. But that still doesn't answer the question of why there is such a lack of healing and miracles in today's church and among Christians. Of course Charismatiics would say there are such healings and miracles in their circles. I've been in those circles, and I didn't see it there either.

    Healing and miracles

I think you have a point about the leadership. But I don't think the lack of healings and miracles can be laid entirely on the leadership.

    Were Calvin and Luther 'saved'?

Thank you for your post. I'd rather not start a thread on PSA. In the past, and in other places, I have argued and discussed that to the point I wearied of it. I'll just say this: My atonement views align with those held by the earliest churches; those views were neither RC nor Protestant. The...

    Were Calvin and Luther 'saved'?

In general, I hate evil, not people. I believe there are evil people who act accordingly. I believe there are good people who sometimes do evil things. I believe there are Christians who err, stumble, fall, and sometimes do evil things. I must admit that I come close to hating people who have...

Why should one be a Baptist instead of simply being...

From reading this thread, I believe my view is close to Mur's, although not exactly the same. Apart from that, I'd say annihilationism is closer to scripture and less horrible than the doctrine of eternal punishment. Oh, and I'm not liberal.

And I'm inclined to believe you're a Pharisee, so good riddance.

    Healing and miracles

Jesus said His followers would do greater things than He did. Why don't we see healings and miracles inside and outside our churches like the first century Christians did? Shouldn't we be seeing this occur?

I don't care what you believe. You're dishonest, so I have no desire to talk with you.

    Greetings!

Thanks. I hope as you do -- that you all will bless me, and I will bless you. Fellowship is important to me, especially lately. The Covid years were difficult, and I have some health issues now. I appreciate the welcome!

    Were Calvin and Luther 'saved'?

To clarify: My purpose is not to bash Calvinists. I previously stated that two of my friends are Calvinists, and they are two of the finest people I know. I do have a problem with certain points of Calvinist theology.

    Were Calvin and Luther 'saved'?

Yes, that was my point -- the 'Munsterites' were an aberration; they had nothing in common with the Anabaptist movement except believers' baptism. Their church-statist opponents tried to link them with Anabaptists in order to smear Anabaptists and further justify killing them. Anabaptists were...

    Were Calvin and Luther 'saved'?

I have made no factual error regarding the Anabaptists. I am not embarrassed about facts, but you clearly are. I don't have a goal regarding Luther and Calvin or their supporters. I asked a question and stated an opinion.

    Were Calvin and Luther 'saved'?

The difference between Paul, and Luther and Calvin, is that Paul stopped murdering after his conversion.
