Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

@Van and @JesusFan Really? It's not enough that you guys have an entire sub-forum dedicated to Cal. vs. Arm., but you have to hijack my thread to keep going on it? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year anyway. :Cool

Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

Not sure what you mean by this in regards to the OP.

Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

I was looking through my books of Christian poetry hoping to find the following poem, which I remembered dimly. I finally found it: The Anvil of God’s Word by John Clifford Last eve I paused beside the blacksmith’s door And heard the anvil ring the vestal chime. Then looking in, I saw upon the...

New Book on the Doctrine of Scripture

I have learned that Dr. James D. Price went to Heaven at age 100 on Dec. 12. He is now forever with his beloved wife and Savior. IMO he was the greatest Christian Hebrew scholar in the US in the 20th century. Just check out the Hebrew resources on his website if you don't believe me: Hebrew...

New Book on the Doctrine of Scripture

James Price is a friend of my sister and mine. He is a faithful and good Christian, now 100, who has faithfully served God for longer than I've been alive. He is not duplicitous at all. I know him well. Just because you disagree with him doesn't give you license to insult his character...

Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

This is a good post, and you've pointed out some salient points. You can add "earnestly contend for the faith" from Jude v. 3. What I should have put in my OP though is that my point is about the whole Bible rather than the Gospel, etc. If I can narrow this point down, there are many Christians...

Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

"The Word of God is like a lion. You don't have to defend a lion. All you have to do is let the lion loose, and the lion will defend itself." (Augustine or Spurgeon or Moody, no one is sure. :Biggrin)

Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

I have a little book from before 1900 by former British Prime Minister William E. Gladstone, The Impregnable Rock of Holy Scripture. I love that title! That's the Word of God, not some dinky little artifact that we must defend. No, it is the great, impregnable rock that every ship opposed to God...

Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

Good post. I'm all in favor of apologetics, but we all know that is not what saves souls. It might open a sinner's mind to the Gospel, but you will agree that the power of the Gospel, Holy Spirit and Word of God are all necessary for the salvation of souls.

    Excellent! I love it.

Always happy if Spurgeon agrees with me!

Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

Yet we do have "defend" (שׁפט) in the KJV many times for actions of God, and also for human actions (Ps. 82:3).

Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

Idyllic! Japan is a physically beautiful country, the culture is fascinating (I trained in Judo and Karate before ever going there, and loved them) and the people are gracious and clever, but very stiff. Making actual friends there is very challenging. They tend to not be very open to...

"There is safety in believing the words of the KJV Bible." A powerful quote by our Board member, JD731.

Personally, I've read Shakespeare. Took two 3 credit college courses and got straight A's. Acted in a Shakespearean play. The language of Shakespeare is not more extensive than the language of "A Christmas Carol," which my church is acting in an hour from now. (I'm a "charity solicitor.")...

I agree. There is so much technology nowadays, and formal education goes to a much higher level, that is is impossible that children of the Dark and Middle Ages had a more extensive vocabulary.

"There is safety in believing the words of the KJV Bible." A powerful quote by our Board member, JD731.

I am friends with their American representative, a truly blessed Bible translator, currently working as a consultant on five different missionary translations. He was the lead translator on the Mongolian Bible. The TBS has for years given free TR New Testaments to our Greek students, and I...

Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

Very good. We agree, then. The use of a violent metaphor in Scripture is not physical. Yes, I can tell how you were triggered. But please know that whatever Hovind did to his wife or any other sins he committed. as absolutely nothing to do with me. I've never even met him. My wife and I are...

Do We Need to Defend the Bible?

Thanks for posting. The term "sword of the Spirit" is a metaphor. Are you objecting to Biblical metaphors simply because they sound violent to you? When we use the sword of the Spirit in spiritual warfare it does not mean to harm people. It is not me but the Holy Spirit who applies the Word of...
