Has any version translated Mark 7:3 literally?

I have several KJVs and only the 1611 reprints have these notes (not the ones I typically read). Do I understand this correctly: the KJV men knew that the Greek meant "with the fist" but chose to render it "oft"? This note seems to preclude the idea that they formally followed the Latin here...

Has any version translated Mark 7:3 literally?

No slight against the KJV intended. Many of the versions I quoted had a footnote which I chose not to include at the time. Additionally, the thread was not intended to focus on the KJV's rendering.

Has any version translated Mark 7:3 literally?

JOHN GILL except they wash their hands oft, eat not; or except they wash very cautiously, with great care, diligence, and exactness, as the Syriac version suggests; and about which there are various rules given, to be observed with great strictness . Some render the words, "they wash their...

Has any version translated Mark 7:3 literally?

Here is another that mentions "fist" -- … will not eat unless they have washed hand against fist, (Lattimore, 1996) Two more that use "wrist" -- … do not eat unless they wash their hands up to the wrist, (Kleist, 1956) … decline to eat till they wash their hands up to the wrist...

Has any version translated Mark 7:3 literally?

Actually there are several versions that have "fist" in their translation of Mark 7:3 -- For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash the hands with the fist, holding the tradition of the elders. (KJ3 Literal Translation NT by Jay P. Green, 2006) For the Pharisees and all...

Has any version translated Mark 7:3 literally?

A quote from the Pulpit Commentary on Mark 7 -- Verse 3. - Except they wash their hands oft. The Greek word here rendered "oft" is πυγμῇ: literally, with the fist, i.e. with the closed hand, rubbing one against the other. This word has caused a vast amount of criticism; and the difficulty of...

Has any version translated Mark 7:3 literally?

Here is Mark 7:3 from the Greek TR -- οἱ γὰρ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ πάντες οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐὰν μὴ πυγμῇ νίψωνται τὰς χεῖρας οὐκ ἐσθίουσιν κρατοῦντες τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων I am primarily focusing on the word πυγμῇ (Strong's #4435) which can mean 'the fist, clenched hand', or 'up to the elbow'...

What Does "Inspired" Mean, Relative to the Bible?

The giving of the Holy Scriptures was virtually a one-time event for which we do not possess a singularly adequate English word to describe it, and we certainly do not comprehend the precise details of the method employed by God for the process. We know men were intimately involved but the...

    Kent Hovind KJV

Hovind offers to sell a Gipp book which I reviewed here -- http://www.baptistboard.com/showthread.php?t=80805&highlight=gipp+history+bible If these are the sources where Hovind gets his ideas, it is no wonder he is confused.

    Kent Hovind KJV

Quite right, I didn't get that. So, what specific event in 1875 is referenced as the selling of the W-H NT? They had worked on it for over 20 years by that year (clearly they would have had 'pitched' their ideas long before that).

    Kent Hovind KJV

Ah, yes. It wasn't for English was it? I don't think that's what Hovind meant. He was trying to give the author some credibility. Many of us that have read Riplinger know first-hand her false citation and illogical argumentation. I posted about one of her books here --...

    Kent Hovind KJV

I'm sorry, you missed the point I was trying to make. Perhaps others did, too. It was that Hovind got the date wrong ("in 1875").

    Kent Hovind KJV

Why does Hovind say (at about 11:55 in the video) that the author of New Age Bible Versions, Gail Riplinger has a "PhD in English"? All available documentation indicates that her degrees (none are PhDs) are in Home Economics, Interior Design, and Art.

    Kent Hovind KJV

Why does Hovind say (at about 8:55 in the video) that the Wescott-Hort Greek New Testament was sold to the world "in 1875"? As far as I can tell it was first published in 1881.

    Kent Hovind KJV

Hovind says that an Egyptian "cult" became known as the "Alexandrians" (listen at about 5:40 into the video). I have a problem with that assertion. First, who names a "cult" after a city? I can't think of any political, philosophical, or religious group that is named after a city. Citizens...

    Kent Hovind KJV

I'm gonna abbreviate my critique somewhat. Kent Hovind says (at about 6:08): The only mention of "Alexandria" in the Bible is when they were disputing with Stephen, arguing with the real Christians ... the only mention of these folks is bad, so anything out of Alexandria, anything out of Egypt...

    Kent Hovind KJV

Yes, I understand that he is using some generalities apparently due to a time restraint or similar situation. I have also misspoken or confused terms, dates, or order of chronology when speaking, so I am willing to give any lecturer some allowances. However, I hold these things against Mr...

    Is God "free"?

Theses are not exactly what I was hoping for, but I think you knew that. But I am not saying that God does not pick and choose. Certainly, He does. Nonetheless, in a sense I disagree with your above comments. In reverse order: God's "withholding" is merely a delay of His wrath and not a...

    Kent Hovind KJV

So, here is what Kent Hovind says next: "They got all these scrolls together, found 5000 copies of the Bible that survived the persecution, and they were identical in everything except spelling, peoples names, you know -- Peter and Pedro, stuff like that had changed." No kidding, that what he...

    Original Sin??? #1

I'm very sorry, but I don't understand how this response answered my question. Could you try again? I'd really like to know.
