Hispanics say that there is no such thing as a Hispanic and find the term derogatory because they all have different cultures from different countries.

Many from Latin America are Catholic and are liberal on social issues so they vote Democrat on social issues. They don't assimilate. The older generation of Mexicans came here to escape the bloodbath of the Mexican revolution and the ensuing corruption that still prevails. They liked it here.

That's the same as saying..."But, I have black and hispanic friends. I'm not prejudiced".

Laughable in the face of facts.
Some might interpret me that way. I'm only saying perhaps that exposure to diverse ethnicities would help some folks see a brighter side.

Talk to the democrats. They're the ones that created the permanent welfare class and want desperately to perpetuate it. Votes is at the heart of it.

LBJ told us so.

This is why I think Christians should avoid politics. If we personally help people with needs in Christ's name, God receives glory and not politicians. Or if we criticise politicians who help, even if for wrongful reasons, we end up looking like Scrooge.

As I see it, people go where they are most loved. And politicised churches shoot their own feet out from under themselves if they align with political parties that some deem to be less loving.

:Roflmao Democrats "love" minorities. :Roflmao

They enslave them with promises of freebies and use them to stay in power. Yeah, right. They "love" them.

I don't mind being fiscally responsible and I don't mind expecting others to bear responsibilty for their own behavior.

If that makes me look like "scrooge", so be it.

It beats being a sheep in order to get a handout.

I still don't get why we would want to look like Scrooge condemning the Dems who some think wonderful. We only preach to our own choir, filling the pews with them, while driving the needy away.

This is why it is best to take personal responsibility in caring for the needy. Not leaving it up to politics. I live by Paul's rule, if you don't work, you don't eat. But since I cannot visit every skid row, and conduct personal interviews, I give on a personal but informed basis. But I also think we shoot our own feet taking political sides.

Back on the inherent racism of the term "Hispanic":

"...I am not discovering America here, but maybe America needs to discover this.

"There are two dozen Spanish-speaking countries in the Americas. Each one of those countries is as unique as countries can be. Their histories are different, their customs, foods, music, traditions, and even their slang, are different. Every “Hispanic” country has peoples of every ethnic origin, race, religion, economic status, family size, educational background, physical size and build, level of work skills, and intellectual and mental ability. You will find this to be the case even more dramatically in all cities with large ports, and in resort areas. A lot of people from other countries who come for trade and pleasure return to settle permanently in those areas.

"You want diversity? Let’s look at real diversity:

"There are Peruvians of Japanese ancestry (and one of them became president of Peru). There are Chinese Cubans. There are English Puerto Ricans (my mother’s high school teacher’s family, for instance) – and Puerto Rico has a significant illegal alien problem from people from adjacent islands. There are German Venezuelans. There are Irish Argentinians. The Africans that were brought to Latin America from the slave trade are not all from the same areas of Africa and did not follow the same traditions. Even among the native peoples, the Peruvian Quechua are not the Chilean Mapuche who are not the Mayans of Apocalypto....."

The "Hispanic" mirage

This is informative, but as a practical question, is there one word to call them, then? "Hispanic" appears on forms I fill out all the time, including government forms.

When I know somebody personally, I don't call him or her Hispanic. My son has a little friend from Chile he goes on play dates with sometimes. I just say about him and his mom that they are from Chile.

But when talking about a group, I don't know what word to use then, if Hispanic is inherently racist.

What word do they use? Latina?

It's one of those situations where no term will be good enough to suit all of them.

So use hispanic or latino/latina or Mexican (even if they're not). It really just doesn't matter.

This is one of several times now in this thread where I can't tell if you're speaking literally of a the Baptist church, literally of the Republican party, conflating them both, or using one as a metaphor for the other.

Don't be confused.

He's just another liberal who tries to hide it behind his self righteous blatherings.

I don't have any group in mind. I think many denominations are political and end up filling the pews with the choir, preaching only to them, while driving away the folks who think differently.

It’s your basic tripe. Telling people they need a savior from their own sin is a divisive message.

On the other hand, nice messages get people in the pews. And keep them there.
