I'm not sure, but the intent of the OP's post was to protect those you love...to me the point was pretty "Plain n Simple".

As a husband and father, I believe God gave me an awesome responsibility to both physically and spiritually exersize watch-care over my family. I believe it is nothing short of cowardice to stand by and do nothing to protect those precious people God has given me charge over.

For instance, I am to love my wife as Christ loved the church and laid his life down for her. In other words, I am to be willing to stand in the gap physically and spiritually.

To Brother Plain n Simple: Standing up to an armed intruder in protection of family and defiance of their evil intent is not fear. It's courage - and it's honorable.

In other words, fear would cause me to not protect them. Look how many warrior-prophets there were in days of old...were they living in immaturity and fear?

Sometimes Scripture is explained without using common sense. God ordained marriage in Genesis. We are to treat our spouse as Christ treated the church, and protecting her is included in that. As fathers, we are charged with bringing up our children in the nurture and admonitiion of the Lord. Inherent in that charge is protecting our children. When we got married, each of us took an oath which includes protecting our families.

In sixty years, I thought no one could say anything that surprises me, but this takes the cake. Mr. Murderer, please come in and kill my family while I ponder what would Jesus do. Sin or not, someone puts my family in harm's way, a 38 cal slug is headed their way.

As Ricky Ricardo used to say "aye, yi, yi!!"

I agree with most everything except the statement "Sin or not." I never hold that my way is above that of the Lord's and I don’t care what He says which is what that statement makes claim to. I think this is why the church is in the troubled state it is in today and it is a far more serious and dangerous an issue then the one that plain_n_simple is proposing. I would suggest a re-thinking of that statement.

Wonder if we should have thrown bibles at the Nazi army in WW II instead of using bullets?

You know, we do not usually agree, but I will give you this point. It was a poor choice of words. I have to admit an instant of outrage over someone not willing to protect their family. A better way to word it is that it is not sin to protect your family, in any shape, form or fashion, plain and simple.

*I deleted this post referring to the character of men unwilling to defend their families.*

I have already posted that I have never owned a gun.

I'll add this....

I have frends who own guns for personal protection. And there is somthing I have noticed..consistantly.

When I am with them, and they are talking about thier guns, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, they all..always.. get a look in thier eyes. Sort of a gleam in their eyes. sort of a bragging look. As if they are dreaming of the day that they..(((finally)))...get to have the thrill of KILLING a man. (and these are christians!)

Its sort of like all the laughing icons, and smiley icons all through this thread...which of course is all about killing a person.

I'll add an icon...:tear:

I own a gun and so do a good number of my friends and family. Never have I witnessed this attitude amongst us. We have said we would use it if the time called for it, but there is no acute desire to kill.

"There are plenty of biblical examples of godly men, and women, who killed people in the name of God" God made a change with the coming age of grace and who to listen to from now on. He told the disciples what it was while Elijah, Moses, and Jesus talked. It's in 3 of the gospels so it might be important.

Yeah, I suppose so. 3 out of 4 ain't bad. 75% important does warrant attention.
So don't listen to Moses and Elijah. Just listen to the One who at least twice made a whip and chased the crooked traders out of the temple, turning over their tables with money and animals. And hope a whip is the deadliest thing an intruder in your home has on him, and that no bigger than yours.

dod that same person instruct his Apostles to take up a sword for a clothing item, like wearing say leather boots?

As far as we know, two things made Christ outwardly angry, the money changers, and the Pharisee's hypocricy. I do not recall Him getting angry at the sins we put at the top, such as the prostitute the crowd was going to stone, drunkedness, etc. Not that He did condoned these acts, but the message was go and sin no more without the anger. The difference in reaction is noteworthy.

Anyway, the guidance Scripture gives on the relationship between a husband, wife and children certainly includes a bond of love, and within that, our protection. Christ died for the church, and that is how we are to treat our spouses. Our children are gifts from the Lord. The only gift more precious than family and life is Christ dying for us.

Glad to hear that. I have no issue with that attitude.

I saw enough of guns and killing other humans during the Korean War. I do own a gun now, but it is just for killing some wild invasive animals, namely squirrels.

I don't need a gun here where I live in Canada. I don't even have locks on my doors. My only weapon would be the sword of the LORD; the Bible.

I am not critical of those who hunt. I just don't think about someone invading my home. Maybe if I lived in some parts of the US, I would arm myself...I just don't know.

Cheers,

Jim

Firstly, this thread isn't about killing a person. It's about protecting your family. Second, I am sorry your friends are bloodthirsty. But that doesn't mean everyone is.

I doubt they're bloodthirsty. More likely they appreciate the art and engineering that goes into making a fine tool as well as appreciating the work that goes into learning how to use that tool effectively. My nail guns, cordless drills, various saws, and firearms are all tools that are well made and effective for providing for my family and other people I care about. My Bibles and study aids are also well made and effective for performing my other ministry tasks. It is no different than a truck driver appreciated a well made rig, a chef appreciating quality pots, pans, and utensils, or an office worker appreciating a good computer and well maintained network.
