i was browsing through this thread and noticed a magnifier ......... does everyone here know that when you are on BB if you hold the `ctrl` button on your keyboard down and rotate the wheel on your mouse, you can enlarge, and decrease the size of the print here?
Can anyone help me find a free programme that has spreadsheet and data base facilities .

Free virus protection: AVG, I've been using it and it has a minor glitch. I run it first thing in the morning, it finishes it'scan. Some times when I start it, it will say Last Scan Aborted. I didn't abort it, it had finished it's scan.

Also when I run spybot and it gets to cool search it stalls there.

Is it possible that I have spyware or a virus that the programs I'm using aren't detecting something?

Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you Brother Trotter, I'll try them. One more question, my wife downloads games from the internet. Could they have a virus, even if I have virus protection can I get one from a download?

The guy whom writes PCs for Dummies say's you can get viruses from downloaded Screensavers. So I'm assuming viruses can get in from games.

We've had this computer about 4 years and I still don't understand a lot of things about it, just like my wife. When I think I have her figured out, she does something different.

I wonder if God made women that way because he knew that it would keep us guys in line.

Froma download? Please explain.

More likely you'd end up with a load of adware/spyware. Here's a quote from a post of mine elsewhere that has some advice:
First-
MSCONFIG (when used with the RUN command) opens up the System Configuration Utility. Most of the stuff in there you don't want to mess with unless you know what you are doing or have detailed instructions.

Click the STARTUP tab. The list that it pulls up is everything that you can choose to start up when Windows does.

Why is all of this stuff in the list? Because every program designer thinks his 'creation' is so indispensible that no one could possibly want it to NOT start up with their computer (yeah, right), so they set it into the list and have it to do just that.

Once you're at the list, look it over and see what all has a check mark. Every program that does starts up when Windows loads... EVERYTIME!

If something is checked, but you don't know what it is, Google it and find out.

Once you have seen what is there, uncheck everything that you don't need or want. Keep your firewall, antivirus, broadband drivers, graphics drivers, whatever you absolutely have to have, but uncheck everythign else.

Once you are done, click APPLY, OK, then reboot.

When your computer starts up, you'll get a grey box about the System Configuration Utility. Check the box about 'Don't run on startup' then OK.

If you had a lot of stuff checked, then your comp ought to start up faster and run more stable.

Second-
Download and run AdAware, Spybot, and possibly Microsoft AntiSpyware.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/SpyBot-Search_&_Destroy_d2471.html
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en
(All are free. Be sure to have each one update itself before you scan.)

Third-
Uninstall any unused or unneeded programs you have on your hard drive.

Fourth-
Download and run TweakNow to clean up your computer's registry.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/TweakNow_RegCleaner_d4134.html

Fifth-
Run Disk Defragmenter START- ALL PROGRAMS- ACCESSORIES- SYSTEM TOOLS- DISK DEFRAGMENTER).

Reboot your computer and see if it cranks up a bit faster, plus it ought to have a lot more zip to it as well.
Follow all the steps, but especially the second.

I downloaded Spybot, but when I run it, it stops at cool web search and goes no further. The first time it happened I waited 30 or 45 minutes and it didn't move.
I got out of the program and restarted it, it ran up to CWS and stopped. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, it didn't change a thing.
I restarted the computer, no go.

I found a free anti spyware on microsoft and it does a good job.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same problem with Spybot.

A cool little program program I came across the other day.

UberIcon

"ÜberIcon creates a more customizable atmosphere on your desktop by extending the Windows operating system to include new effects for your icons and folders. It is completely plugin based allowing the user to have control over the look and feel of their system. The program's name translates to "OverIcon" which we feel is perfect for a program that adds effects on top of the icons in your system."

What it does... It changes the way your icons react when you double-click them. If you have it set to iBounce, the icon enlarges to about three times its size for an instant... like it 'bounced' up. If you have it set to iZoom, the icon gives off a pulse when it is double-clicked. Either way, t adds a different look to a rather mundane act.

I posted this on the Pit Stop, but thought I'd put it here too.
Found a small browser that enhances with IE & seems to work fairly nice. web page
What caught my attention was the different skins you can download (I'm a long time Trekkie!) & even has a program installed to add your own.
It's about 3.5Mgb's, so it doesn't take a lot of space & doesn't seem to slow anything down.
I have a dinosaur of a computer so I won't use any program that does that.
Trotter, I downloaded the UberIcon but I do believe it had some spyware enclosed. Least wise didn't see any before I installed it. Might want to check!

PhaseOut is a great IE based browser. I use to have it, and I used it quite a bit.

No spyware here, Preacher.

Here's another neat program that is free.

Yahoo! Widget Engine (formerly Konfabulator) 3.0

The Yahoo! Widget Engine (formerly known as Konfabulator) is a JavaScript runtime engine for Windows and Mac OS X that lets you run little files called Widgets that can do pretty much whatever you want them to. Widgets can be alarm clocks, calculators, can tell you your WiFi signal strength, will fetch the latest stock quotes for your preferred symbols, and even give your current local weather. What sets Yahoo! Widget Engine apart from other scripting applications is that it takes full advantage of today's advanced graphics.

The format for these Widgets is completely open and easy to learn so creating your own Widgets is an extremely easy task. For the "skinning" crowd, Yahoo! Widget Engine is a dream come true. You can easily change the look, feel, layout, even functionality of a Widget so that it matches your lifestyle, your desktop, or the pants or skirt you have on that day.

I've had Konfabulator for a long time, and it is really neat. You choose which widgets you want on your desktop, if any. Plus, you can search for and download more. I use the Movie Times, widget, the Digital Clock widget, and the Yahoo! Weather widget mostly, but sometimes I have more running.
