Knoppix is a version of linux that boots from a CD. You download an image and burn it to CD. You _don't_ have to install it to your hard disk.

It makes a great little rescue disk for when a PC won't boot or a great test drive to see if you'll like linux without messing up your Windows PC!
I have tried this and it is very cool...you can just burn the CD...boot from it and go. I used it on my HP e-PC and it worked great and I could even get online with it. :)

Has any one mentioned Pro Tools free on this post? I know it has been on others. It is a free 8 track version of the industry standard recording software from Digidesign. It is to recording what Photoshop is to image editing.

The site says the Windows version is for 98/ME. Anybody know if it works with XP, too?

I did find Audacity, which is an open source recording program. It was recommended here and I tried it and found it to work very well. It is very similar to adobe audition. I successfully recorded my Sunday PM sermon, edited it, removed a place where I accidentally hit the microphone with my hand, and then put it on a CD that will play in my audio CD player. It seems to work very well.

I would have tried protools, but wasn't going to download 40MB to try it. I figured if it would have worked on XP or 2000, they would have said so.

I think I'll try this openoffice. I've heard it's great.
Cool, another Mac user.
I too use both a Mac and I have an HP but I don't use it much at all.
What kind of Mac software are you looking for?
There is Mac Sword which is the sword project for the Mac.
There is online Bible for the Mac.
Accordance is what I use but it is $40

How old is your Mac?

I don't use alll that much freeware but I use a lot of low cost software, like $30 or less, I also have a lot of more expensive software like Pro Tools for audio, Photoshop, Dreamweaver adn Flash for web. Toast for CDs and DVDs. And a few others.

Anyone know of a "spell checker" that can be used in conjunction with forum posts? (I need it very badly!)

I had one before I had to get a new computer, but can't find where I got it from.

Thanks!

I use the extension "DictionarySearch" for Firefox. You highlight the word, right-click it, and choose "Dictionary search for...". It links to Dictionary.com and looks for the word, and shows you options for what the monstrosity you wrote might be.

ePrompter automatically and simultaneously checks and retrieves your email messages from up to sixteen password protected email accounts AND lets you read, delete and respond to any of your messages with a simple click on the account of your choice - without ever having to launch your email program or go to your webmail's site.
Just found this - seems to work GREAT if you use multiple email accounts.
