Knoppix is a version of linux that boots from a CD. You download an image and burn it to CD. You _don't_ have to install it to your hard disk.

It makes a great little rescue disk for when a PC won't boot or a great test drive to see if you'll like linux without messing up your Windows PC!

I have tried this and it is very cool...you can just burn the CD...boot from it and go. I used it on my HP e-PC and it worked great and I could even get online with it.

Has any one mentioned Pro Tools free on this post? I know it has been on others. It is a free 8 track version of the industry standard recording software from Digidesign. It is to recording what Photoshop is to image editing.

The site says the Windows version is for 98/ME. Anybody know if it works with XP, too?

Pro Tools free does not and will not work on XP...I have shed many a tear trying to get it to and it won't!

I did find Audacity, which is an open source recording program. It was recommended here and I tried it and found it to work very well. It is very similar to adobe audition. I successfully recorded my Sunday PM sermon, edited it, removed a place where I accidentally hit the microphone with my hand, and then put it on a CD that will play in my audio CD player. It seems to work very well.

I would have tried protools, but wasn't going to download 40MB to try it. I figured if it would have worked on XP or 2000, they would have said so.

I don't use alll that much freeware but I use a lot of low cost software, like $30 or less, I also have a lot of more expensive software like Pro Tools for audio, Photoshop, Dreamweaver adn Flash for web. Toast for CDs and DVDs. And a few others.

I use the extension "DictionarySearch" for Firefox. You highlight the word, right-click it, and choose "Dictionary search for...". It links to Dictionary.com and looks for the word, and shows you options for what the monstrosity you wrote might be.

I just found a spell check extension for Firefox:
