COMMON GROUND COFFEE HOUSE #79

Thankful

<img src=/BettyE.gif>
I'm so excited! We going to Florida to see my grandkids. We are taking two grandchildren with us. We were going to send them on the plane to visit their cousins, but Ed said they were too young to travel alone. I didn't argue with him, so we are going to fly with them. They are going to stay awhile and one of their cousins will fly back with them for a visit.

Hope everyone has a great holiday.

Hey! I didn't say anything about cats!
So, by your own admission, there's no fightin', feudin' and fussin'. But cats are okay, right?

Did you hear the one about the cat and the paper shredder.........?

We had cajun shrimp. Jim brought home some oysters for me to fry but with doing babysitting for the highschool graduate tonight until 11 and not knowing her 18 month old at all, I figured it wasn't a good night to try and be in the kitchen for a long time. He's down for bed, I THINK. It's pretty quiet down there.

His grandmother said he'd go down at 8:00.

I'm sure looking forward to a long weekend. Wish it wasn't my week (again) for extended session but my best friend is going to help me in Jim's place so we'll enjoy that.

Evening all!

Well I managed to get the front porch cleaned off, have a cup of coffee with my neighbor and go to Walmart with T and two kids. Have I done enough today????? Wasn't motivate to move out of my chair, if you want to know the truth and only accomplished about half of what I wanted to. I should have gotten the grass mown and the push mower going and at least part of the pushing done.

While I was out getting the yard ready to mow, I found some nasties attacking the leaves of one of my pecan trees. These things:

http://www.forestryimages.org/browse/detail.cfm?imgnum=1223068

are all over it. I've found out that they can be treated with pesticides, but can't find exactly which one to use or whether or not it is worth treating. A couple of places I've seen say they are ugly but won't damage the tree. I'm not a pesticide kind of person unless it is necessary.

Tonight's pizza night! Then I'm either going to find a book or watch TV(if anything is on).

Diane, you're lucky your younguns are quiet. Mine can't be still, much less quiet!   They're wild as bucks tonight. The oldest two finally took it outside. Maybe they won't get eaten by mosquitos.

Well the little one, 18 months, is sleeping very well. His mother and grandparents plan on dinner after graduation so said to expect them around 11:00 p.m. I'm glad today was much calmer since it's a 19 hour 'work' day for me, babysitting wise.

HELP.... we've been here six years. Every summer we have to repaint the front porch railings and around the door. The house was finished during one of the worst rainy seasons in years. We 'guess' the wood hadn't cured or something. It's flaking off really badly this year. Also, our house faces west and the front porch gets full sun from just after 12:00 until setting sun. Suggestions of how to make it STICK?? It's not a LOT of wood but has to be sanded, scraped, etc.

Diane, I have been told that there is a colored stain that looks like paint when applied that will last a lot longer and not flake. But I am not sure where to get it. But you might ask around for it.

Thanks Bro. David, I'll have Jim ask at Home Depot or Lowes and try searching the internet. This is a lot of work with all those little spots and slats.

I just read off the True Value Problem Solver site that we should be using an oil based primer and letting it dry for a few days before topping with the exterior latex paint. We've used latex primer. Hmmmm.... Now about that metal door that's not as blue as it should be....

Never fear---Blackbird is here!!!

The reason your exterior banisters and railing "peel" like they do is because----because----because-----the wood has been pressure treated and a chemical added to prevent decay---and the wood will not absorb the paint---therefore, the latex will peel just like it does on a piece of plastic----paint the outside of a plastic five gallon can with latex----and let it dry---several days if you want----and then set it out in the sun and let it set----after a while the paint will "slide" off of the plastic like water off a duck!!!! Same way with the treated lumber!!!!

Do this----go to Home Depot----get a gallon of paint put out by Glidden called "The Gripper"-----make sure all latex paint is off of the pressure treated bannisters and rails---and then paint with "The Gripper"---it is a special primer for all sorts of materials---wood, plastic, ceramic, stainless steel, glass------you'll need a Bulldozer and several sticks of dynamite to scrap "The Gripper" off of whatever you paint!!!!

Then after Gripper has dried******overnite please******you can go back over it with any sort of other paint---oil or latex----I personally like the semi-gloss latex---it cleans up good !!!

Also----on the side of the house thats "peeling" really bad---expecially in the direct afternoon sun----try the Gripper on it too----sand the problem areas down to bear wood and then apply Gripper and then the usual two coats of regular latex!! Try to paint that problem area early in the day so it can dry real good before the afternoon sun starts beamin' down on it-----the wood gets awefully hot and does not absorb the paint real well when the sun starts beamin' on it!!

***Special note: Blackbird does not own stock interest in Glidden Gripper---he gets no "under the table" cutbacks nor benefits-----all he knows is---it works!!! Try it!!!

Yes, and one more thing----if you decide to pressure wash the house before painting----always---always---always allow at least a space of 3 days between washing and painting to allow the wood to dry---if it rains on one of those three days---that doesn't count for one of the three!

Good morning all:

I'm beginning to think I have the Flu (or something) instead of food poisoning. I am still feeling sick to my stomach this morning!

Bobby came in from Kansas last night and is staying until Memorial Day evening. I sure hope I start feeling better.

We had made plans for Memorial Day, but between me feeling yucky and the cool weather and rain, I doubt we'll get to do much of anything. :(

Cruising,
§ue

Shelia,
Memorial day is the Us start to the summer and more importantly the day we set aside to honored all those who have died not only for our country but, those who have left us. It's a very important holiday to most. But, a lot of people see it as the beginning of the cook out season or when their pool opens. Like most holiday's the ture meaning has been lost cause it's been commerciallized (spelling there).

It's my firday whoo hoo. Only sunday off for now. I'm not sure how long these 6 day mandatory will last but, i'm thankful I have sunday off. So we'll see what's going to happen. I had a lot of fun dispatching the north east last night
. It's one of my favorite places to dispatch although Texas and lousiana is my home dispatching wise
...

See you all later *yawns* it's almost bedtime

Memorial days upon which the graves of the communities' heroes were decorated with flowers and garlands are ancient customs originating in Greece 2,500 years ago.

Memorial days were set aside during the American Civil War in both the United States and the Confederate States of America.

Following the Civil War, also known as the War Between the States, various communities started having memorial services for the war dead. The city of Waterloo, New York was officially recognized as the place where the first memorial services were held after the Civil War.

During the Month of March 1868, just three years after the end of the Civil War, Mrs. Mary Simmerson Cunningham Logan, wife of General John A. Logan, Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic -- the Union Army Veterans Organization -- went to Petersburg. She recounted her visit in her article published in the Los Angeles Daily Times dated May 30, 1903, titled MEMORIAL DAY: A NOTED WOMAN'S STORY OF ITS ORIGIN AND GROWTH. According to Mrs. Logan:

Sheila:

We celebrate Memorial Day much like we do Veteran's Day. There will be a short service on the Court House lawn with a 21-gun salute and a wreath layed at the foot of a statue of the Unknown Soldier.

We also recognize our loved ones who have passed away (it is not just for the miltary). We put flowers on graves, have picnics, cook-outs, family reunions, etc.

The whole house is vinyl or brick except for the porch in the picture, Blackbird, but that sounds GREAT! It's going to take us a while to scrape all the paint off but it's supposed to rain 3 days or so this coming week. That sure makes sense tho because the wood had that greenish color to it before they painted it. (We moved in before the house was finished!)

Thanks so much!

Sue, So sorry to hear you're still ill. If it's the stomach virus that Scarlett had and went around here, people were VERY sick for about a week. Sometimes it went away and came back a few days later. Praying it's not that and you feel much better soon!

Cook-outs and outdoor activities plus lots of 'summer sales  ... Yep, that's Memorial Day!

I was wondering what happened to Rachel's post as well...To edit is one thing, to delete is another. Now we have lost Rachel.

Cheers,
