Teaching and preaching an experience is scriptural

I have never listened to Paul Washer but if he preaches an experience of Grace I will give him an amen! and it is backed by scripture. If I relied on my on understanding it is fallible, I will rely on the infallibility of God and his word. I have leaned on my experience for 32 years. So yes an experience of Grace is necessary and the scriptures back it up.

In the Old Testament Laban recognized that God had blessed him by experience:

(Gen 30:27) And Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.

The preacher in Ecclesiastes speaks of having a great experience:
(Ecc 1:16) I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

And Paul writes in Romans of having glory in the tribulations leading to patience, experience and hope. This hope makes us not ashamed:
(Rom 5:1) Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

(Rom 5:2) By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

(Rom 5:3) And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

(Rom 5:4) And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

(Rom 5:5) And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

So yes I base my salvation on an experience supported by the scriptures.

Amen to this most wonderful post. Whenever I am bombarded by Satan(which he has been working overtime lately), I always go back to that moment in time when He came in a bound up the strong man in my life(because He is the stronger man), cast him out, spoiled his goods, and took up His abode in my life permanently. I can always go back there to my little "spot in the garden", where I partook of the Tree of Life, Jesus Christ. That's my experience of Grace, and I'll cherish it forever.

Winman,

If you listen to whole sermons by Paul Washer you will here a complete presentation.

That's true, but from what I saw, he did not give that girl biblical advice. She had already called on the Lord to save her from her sins, and she was obviously very sincere. She needed assurance based on scripture, not to be terrified even more.

I agree that salvation and assurance of salvation must be rooted in scripture.

All biblical preaching teaches that.

He didn't give her biblical preaching, he told her to cry out as if Hell was going to open up and swallow her. That is cruel, the girl was already in torments.

Mentioning romans 10 without explaining it is not teaching it.

Yeah, and I bet you Calvinists can mess this simple verse completely up. If a person believes that Jesus is the Son of God who died for their sins and rose from the dead and calls on him to save them, Jesus does save them. Simple.

This verse is only true of believers praying in God's will

Anybody that calls on Jesus to save them is a believer. People do not call on whom they do not believe.

It is not God's will that all men be saved or they would be.

Well now, THAT is the debate between Cal and non-Cal isn't it?? I could list a dozen verses that say God wants to save all men and you know it. You will change the definition of the word all in every one of them.

1 Timothy 4:10

God is the savior of all men

1 Timothy 2:3,4

God wants all men to be saved

1 Timothy 2:6

Jesus gave Himself to be a ransom for all men

1 Timothy 2:1

We are to pray for all men

1 Timothy 2:4

God wants all men to be saved

1 Timothy 2:6

God gave Himself a ransom for all men

2 Cor. 5:15

Jesus died for all

2 Peters 3:9

God does not want any to perish, but wants all to come to repentance

Acts 17:30

God commands all people everywhere to repent.

Isaiah 45:22

"Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth."

John 1:12

To all who receive Him … become the children of God.

John 12:32

When I am lifted up. I will draw all men unto myself.

Luke 2:10

The angels said to the shepherds that the good news was for all men

Matthew 11:28

Come to me, all who are weary and burdened

Romans 8:32

God gave His Son for us all

Romans 3:22

Righteousness comes to all who believe

Romans 3:23,24

All have sinned … and are justified

Titus 2:11

Salvation has appeared to all men

Zephaniah 2:3

All who seek the Lord …

No one should offer a false assurance to someone. They need a biblically based assurance.

Yes, and only the non-Cal preacher did that.

Old Union Brother posted a very biblically sound post.Assurance of salvation comes and goes,as our obedience to known commands wavers.

That is why the Reformed look to the heart, rather than a shallow formula...repeat this prayer and you are saved.

Assurance should be founded squarely on the word of God. If not, when the storm of doubts come, your house built on the shifting sands of emotion and experience will fall.

It is not as simple as it seems ....as Paul speaks of:

2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

You say:
you believe in osas
you say it is simple, just believe=you are saved

Paul speaks of some who have believed in Vain...do you see the problem here? Can you connect the dots???

Winman,
1 Timothy 4:10

God is the savior of all men

Anyone who gets saved is saved by God
1 Timothy 2:3,4

God wants all men to be saved
all kinds of men...kings, those in authority
1 Timothy 2:6

Jesus gave Himself to be a ransom for all men
not the jew only
1 Timothy 2:1

We are to pray for all men
yes ...all kinds of men worldwide
1 Timothy 2:4

God wants all men to be saved
yes,,,the same context, all kinds of men
1 Timothy 2:6

God gave Himself a ransom for all men
same context
2 Cor. 5:15

Jesus died for all

2 Peters 3:9

God does not want any to perish, but wants all to come to repentance
You and most non cals butcher the context, which is speaking of the elect, not scoffers
Acts 17:30

God commands all people everywhere to repent.

yes he does
Isaiah 45:22

"
Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth."
yes..universal in scope
John 1:12

To all who receive Him … become the children of God.
Jn 1:13 explains vs 12
John 12:32

When I am lifted up. I will draw all men unto myself.
universal in scope
Luke 2:10

The angels said to the shepherds that the good news was for all men
universal in scope,not Israel only
Matthew 11:28

Come to me, all who are weary and burdened

Romans 8:32

God gave His Son for us all
The all are the predestined elect
Romans 3:22

Righteousness comes to all who believe

Romans 3:23,24

All have sinned … and are justified

Titus 2:11

Salvation has appeared to all men

Zephaniah 2:3

All who seek the Lord …

You quote a list of good verses. We know all men, are not saved.

So for your claim that the scriptures teach that God wants all men to be saved[meaning every person ever born]....and yet all men are not saved......

If salvation is of God alone we must correctly understand each of the verses as all men who ever lived are not saved. If you believe God gives man a part in his own salvation, then it is not all of God....and you deny the fall[which in reality you do.]

You want it both ways and you deny the covenant salvation taught .

Icon,
A personal opinion question for you. Where do you think man ever got the idea he could determine his own salvation or have a part in it, when, God is the Creator? God wrote the Bible, He is the One who is Holy, and He makes the rules. God provides all we need for salvation. It seems to be just by thinking about it, that it is the height of arrogance to think that we have a part to play in salvation. We are a created, sinful, flawed being. We are the ones that sinned. In our natural state, we are self centered, and the last thing on our mind is pleasing the Lord.

Man freely choosing in a sinful state just makes no sense. We should thank God everyday, for choosing us, giving us the faith to believe, and giving us a new heart in the form of the Holy Spirit.

God through the Apostle Paul reveals in the 1st Chapter of Romans the mind of man in his natural state. The wonder of it all is that God chose to save even one of us. But praise God He did. That is the Grace of Holy God and it seems that so many will not accept that truth.

Question? Are we saved by grace through faith as written in the Bible or are we saved by faith in the doctrines of grace as noted by the westminster divines? Seems to be a lot of support here for the latter.

I would hope that no Baptist would subscribe to the Westminster Confession of Faith, since it is a paedobaptist document. That said, some Baptists on here subscribe to the 1689 Second London Baptist Confession of Faith, and see it as a faithful commentary on major doctrines of the Bible; the Bible still being the sole authority for all matters of faith and practice. That said, the 1689 LBC points to the Bible having the answer to your question, not the confession itself:

1689 LBC 14.1

The grace of faith, whereby the elect are enabled to believe to the saving of their souls, is the work of the Spirit of Christ in their hearts, and is ordinarily wrought by the ministry of the Word; by which also, and by the administration of baptism and the Lord's supper, prayer, and other means appointed of God, it is increased and strengthened.
( 2 Corinthians 4:13; Ephesians 2:8; Romans 10:14, 17; Luke 17:5; 1 Peter 2:2; Acts 20:32 )

SN,
The effects of the fall are total in that they are all pervasive.
When anyone is searching through scripture they can see the cumulative effects manifest in outward actions, plus inward thoughts;

3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.

Cain's offering was not acceptable, it was man made religion. He offered what he wanted to instead of what was acceptable....

We see more on the inward thoughts of fallen mankind in psalm 10;

10 Why standest thou afar off, O Lord? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?

2 The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined.

3 For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the Lord abhorreth.

4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God:
God is not in all his thoughts

5 His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them.

6 He hath said in his heart,[
QUOTE] I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity.
7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.

8 He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor.

9 He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net.

10 He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones.

11 He hath said in his heart,
God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will never see it.

12 Arise, O Lord; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble.

13 Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God?
QUOTE] he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require it.
14 Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless.

15 Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness till thou find none.

16 The Lord is King for ever and ever: the heathen are perished out of his land.

17 Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:

18 To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.

This psalm tells us the inner motives of all sinners[in red] in a way that we can know for sure.In common grace the outward manifestations of this wickedness are restrained by God so as it is not total anarchy....and that only as part of God's longsuffering...bearing with the sin of the reprobates only long enough to allow all the elect to come into the ARK.....Christ Jesus:thumbsup:

3 This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

OLD REGULAR also got right at it where Paul shows the downward spiral in Romans 1;
God through the Apostle Paul reveals in the 1st Chapter of Romans the mind of man in his natural state. The wonder of it all is that God chose to save even one of us. But praise God He did. That is the Grace of Holy God and it seems that so many will not accept that truth.

The verse that is mis-used much fits in here describing the noetic effects of the fall;
25 I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:

26 And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

27 Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:

28 Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

29 Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him,
to the one who seeks him;
26 it is good to wait quietly
for the salvation of the Lord.
27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke
while he is young.
28 Let him sit alone in silence,
for the Lord has laid it on him.
29 Let him bury his face in the dust—
there may yet be hope.
30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him,
and let him be filled with disgrace.
31 For no one is cast off
by the Lord forever.
32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion,
so great is his unfailing love.
33 For he does not willingly bring affliction
or grief to anyone.
14
The visions of your prophets
were false and worthless;
they did not expose your sin
to ward off your captivity.
The prophecies they gave you
were false and misleading.

I did not send these prophets,
yet they have run with their message;
I did not speak to them,
yet they have prophesied.
22 But if they had stood in my council,
they would have proclaimed my words to my people
and would have turned them from their evil ways
and from their evil deeds.

Ezekiel 18:32
For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!

It is simple all is not saved not because God doesn't desire them to live it is because they have not repented to live. To turn to God through Jesus Christ and listen and learn from Him they are the ones who will come

I want to thank everyone in this thread who helped me patch things up with Icon, but mostly, I want to thank Icon for his forgiveness after some of the posts of the past. I have patched things up with Zaac, so I am feeling much better. This board has become a part of my life.

My best answer.

Are ye saved, he saved us. ----- Here are the facts.

A. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 1 Cor. 15:3
B. Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead.

Those two things are how we have been saved. The Son laid down his life in our stead. God the Father who beget the Son raised the Son from the dead.

If that had not taken place there would be no salvation for anyone. 1 Cor 15:17 tells us that if Christ has not been raised, and it was the Father who raised him, we are yet in our sins.

It took both for salvation. A. A dead sinless Son. B. The giving of life again to that Son.

We are not, I say again, not talking about a body here we are talking about a Son who had died.

Whether it be, "are ye saved, " of Eph. 2:8 or, "he saved us," of Titus 3:5 they have to be saying A and B above.

A and B above have to be in, grace through the Faith and also have to be in, mercy, by washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.

If A and B are not inclusive in those two verses then we are not saved by the death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ the Son of the living God.

The question is how and to whom and when is the above applied to people?

Paul was not telling people how to be saved, he was telling them what took place by which they can be saved.

1 Peter 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Revival??

Maybe these things are a sign that we might be blessed with a revival of sorts here on the BB. That would be wonderful....and SN...I agree with you...the BB is definitely an important part of my life as well for which I thank God genuinely. It is a blessing and pleasure to be able to enjoy the fellowship of fellow believers here. Can't go to church everyday but we can come here. I have been unemployed for the last 9 months so it has been a blessing to spend a good chunk of my home-time here. I have a job interview that I am hopeful about today (Saturday) so I'd appreciate anybody who would lift my wife and I up in prayer about this. If I get the job it may shorten up my time here on-line but I'm here for life until I "go Home"...then I'll get to actually meet some of you fine folks!

GP,
Will pray that you get that job, if there are people you are meant to interact with about the gospel, if not ...we will prayer God gives you employment where you can be used to save souls with a solid gospel testimony! If the job opens up...God has probably already been preparing the hearts of those persons you will interact with.
