How often are firearms used as a defense?

Very seldom.
Most firearms are used for hunting (killing a living being that is not human). Or, they are used to kill a sheet of paper at the gun range.

Most people carry firearms as a false sense of power over what they fear.
Do they fear thieves and thugs?
Carry a firearm and feel like you have power over thieves and thugs.
Do they fear crooked government agencies?
Carry a firearm and feel like you have power over crooked government.
Do they fear their spouse or children leaving them?
Carry a firearm to cause fear that leaving will result in pain.

Justification for carrying a firearm runs a wide spectrum, but for the majority of reasons to justify carrying a firearm, the bottom line is fear, followed by a false sense of power over what is feared.

Read that last sentence again, because that kind of fear, followed by a supplemental power source, is the core of idolatry.

Its actually being innocent as doves, but smart as snakes, as we live in a fallen world, and God has given to us the right to defend ourselves and our property with the means of the fun if used in a right fashion!

why read articles - so we can be educated and informed of the issues.
IN fact, thats why I will listen-view-read liberal articles!

I like to see all three sides of an issue.

Did you read the article!?
From the article. It presents my point quite well.

The latest data show that people use guns for self-defense only rarely. According to a Harvard University analysis of figures from the National Crime Victimization Survey, people defended themselves with a gun in nearly 0.9 percent of crimes from 2007 to 2011.

David Hemenway, who led the Harvard research, argues that the risks of owning a gun outweigh the benefits of having one in the rare case where you might need to defend yourself.

"The average person ... has basically no chance in their lifetime ever to use a gun in self-defense," he tells Here & Now's Robin Young. "But ... every day, they have a chance to use the gun inappropriately. They have a chance, they get angry. They get scared."

Even if someone wanted to use a gun in self-defense, they probably wouldn't be very successful, says Mike Weisser, firearms instructor and author of the blog "Mike The Gun Guy." He says many people who carry a gun aren't properly trained to use it in this way, and there is no performance validation standard for police officers.

"If we don't even have a minimum standard, not for training, but for performance validation for our law enforcement," he says, "how in God's name is anybody going to say, 'Well, just because you have a gun in your pocket, you know how to use it in self-defense?' You don't."

Firearms are used every single day for self defense. Thats every single day. The news media will never tell you about the good shootings. About how 90% of criminals flee when a person uses a firearm in defense. I have excellent statistics. It shocked me just how often. I will try to find some excellent sources and come back with more information. Guns are used for good and it is a heavy percentage of the time. If all the times were told there would be no gun control issue the news media doesn't tell you about the good so most people don't know where think of it.

What is the sole function of a gun?
To kill something God created.
The article provided by the OP and quoted by myself points to the fact that guns rarely are used for self defense. Law enforcement is given license to use by God's authority. No one else needs a gun.

Certainly you jest? I haven't read it yet, just got home. I've seen the exact opposite. Look at the video I posted and hear about the one trainer who had 70 students of his involved in self defense. Sounds incredible. Just because you are not aware doesn't make it fact. I'm sure you know a lot but everyone can learn something new. Something they didn't know before.

and the article states that many who use their firearm for self-defense (even if they do not fire) will not report it as they could be subject to question - and could even be arrested themselves.

It also says that the vast, vast majority, including law enforcement are poorly trained and will more than likely screw up when they try to use their firearm.

HMMMM
So lets suppose you are in a crowd where there is a mass shooting
Standing next to you is "good guy" - he pulls out his weapon to disable the "bad guy"
Are you going to tell "good guy" that he should put his weapon away - because
he might kill one of Gods creatures??

So in other words you do not hang out with gun owners who practice with their firearms. Perhaps you should meet actual gun owners themselves. You could learn a thing or two.
