A lot of them simply could not afford to. The poverty rate is very high.

Many refused to leave even with offers of assistance. The superdome was there, many chose to stay in their homes.
The looting by the criminals pictured above is appalling. There is no excuse for this behaviour.

There was a day when people would have said - "Looters will be shot on sight."
This event is tragic enough without thieves roaming the streets.
I wonder how many dead bodies they have had to step over to fulfil their lusts.

Reported today: One man who was IN the Super Dome jumped to his death to commit suicide.
The levee holding back the big lake is breached for two blocks and last night, threatening to burst over downtown (lake sits up higher). One hospital downtown was in the process of evacuating patients last night. The other hospital (Tulane) has 1000 patients and employees and their emergency generators are on the second floor and some patients are on life support. If the water reaches the second floor, all their power will be gone. The hospital is surrounded with 6 feet of water and last night, the water was rising (due to breach in the levee) at 1 inch every 5 minutes. Today the leak has slowed.
Area #9 has about 40,000 homes submerged in water up to the roof tops. People are chopping holes in their attics to try and get out and get help. Power lines are still live in some areas and dogs are ensnared in them being electrocuted and no one can reach them. Bodies of people have been seen floating in the water. It is unknown how many people are still in attics, hoping for someone to rescue them. There is no place to go except the Super Dome and it is reported that conditions there are deteriorating.

6:41 P.M. - Efforts to stop the levee break at the 17th Street Canal have ended unsuccessfully and the water is expected to soon overwhelm the pumps in that area, allowing water to pour into the east bank of Metairie and Orleans to an expected height of 12-15 feet.
4:21 P.M. - WWL-TV Reporter quotes officials as saying there may now be 60,000 people in the Superdome and that more people are still being urged to go there.

Shot police officer in surgery
The New Orleans police officer shot in the head by a looter Tuesday was expected to survive, officials said.
The officer, who has not been identified, was in surgery at West Jefferson Medical Center after being shot in the forehead, police said.
The officer was shot by a looter after he and another officer confronted a number of looters at a Chevron store at Shirley and Gen. DeGaulle.
Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies on the scene arrested four people in connection with the shooting. One of the looters reportedly was shot in the arm by an officer during a shootout.

Charity Hospital still has a lot of patients and employees. Their generator has gone out, there are no lights, no electricity, no air conditioning, patients are being ventilated manually, and no evacuation has started. They are surrounded with 6 feet of water and all will have to be Medivac'd out. Last night they had said they were going to evacuate and yet 24 hours later, evacuation hasn't started and they haven't been told by authorities when this will start!
Tulane Hospital is planning to evacuate, as well, 1000 patients and employees.
I don't understand why there are no choppers in there to evacuate these hospitals. One would think hospitals would be prioritized!
I just saw video of looters in a Wal-Mart filling up carts with video games, athletic shoes, shirts, whatever they can get their hands on! Of course, these types of people who do these things are the types who don't work.
It would be understandable if someone was hungry and taking food and water - desperation. But this is appalling!

Biloxi residents got their first look today at the devastation Hurricane Katrina wreaked on their famed beach front.
Landmarks like Beavoir, the final home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, are virtually demolished.
The Davis home, built in 1854, has been reduced to rubble and a frame of a house.

How can we, as Christians, make such harsh statements. These people have lost EVERYTHING! How do you know for certain these people don't work? How do you know their situation? I do NOT agree with looting, but I do have compassion. People need to survive. Anything that is taken can be used for bartering to get needed supplies.Besides, these stores will be reimbursed by their insurance. People are desperate when they are in survival mode! Is is right? No, of course not, but we are all human. Please, lets show some more compassion. I know Jesus would.

The police and rescue officials were going into Wal-Mart and other stores to get food and supplies for the people who are stranded by the storm.
These thieves stealing games, jewelry, drugs etc are not trying to survive, but taking advantage of this disaster to steal.
One man watching the looting was quoted as saying, "To be honest with you, people who are oppressed all their lives, man, it's an opportunity to get back at society,"
