I just heard on the news there have been some reports of sharks in the streets. How terrible is that?

    Matt,

They were using the school buses to help people get to the Super Dome.

Yeah, but why then just leave them there? And wouldn't it have been better to have used the buses to transport people out of town instead of right into the middle of things (that way you save the people AND the buses)?

    Time was the main issue.
The only roads in and out of New Orleans are suspension bridge type setups. They had over 300,000 on them trying to get people out of city. The buses were used to save the people who had ignored the evacuation order. They were in use right up to the moment the storm hit. Once the storm started, where would you put them?

It's one of the saddest situations I can remember. In all of this, I have to give credit to the people, and particularly the churches, of Baton Rouge (my point of origin) for the help they're providing for many of the evacuees. I still have friends there, and thankfully all of them are well.

Folks, I don't think playing the "woulda-shoulda-coulda" game producing fruit at this point. I think we should concur with Enoch's post and continue to pray.

First as for the looting, the only way to stop it would be for the powers that be to issue shoot on sight orders. That would be a non-starter. Then, what's being looted would in the clean up be sent to the landfill as WalMart et al. writes off their inventory as complete losses.

Second, where is the French Navy or for that matter the naval forces of our other not comitted in Iraq allies? If this had happened to say Marseilles, M. le President would be expecting the US Navy to show up. And if they didn't the French papers would be asking why.

A word from the Monroe area. We didn't recieve any damage but we are trying to help the evacuatees.

Please pray that the displaced people who evacuated will find places to stay.

Not all who evacuated found family and friends.

Some escaped to hotel rooms, but even hotels are not going to be able shut down their businesses and give free lodging for what may be several weeks.

A rodeo arena in this area took in people's livestock.

And the local Civic Center took in families and pets that hotels couldn't take.

I have to be realistic with you. This isn't going to last forever. There are some churches taking families in from the Civic Center where it is very, very crowded.

Please pray that these displaced people will find shelter and lodging for an extended period of time that will not exhaust financially and mentally the generous people who are extending it.

Four families already enrolled their children in my school district. I talked to my supervisor today and she told me.

Please pray that these displaced children find a school soon. Whether it be public, private, or homeschool. They don't need to be out of school for two or three months.

Also, several grocery stores here are working in connection with the Red Cross. They have set aside places in the grocery stores where you can buy certain items (the Red Cross has a list) and store them there at the grocery store.

Please pray that everyone in the Monroe area who enters a grocery store and sees that sign will have a move of God in their spirits and will purchase items for these people via the Red Cross.

    Peace-
    Scarlett O.

Where would we be without the national media to tell us how miserable we are? Everything they report is negative, negative, negative. I have yet to see a story about someone who has done something GOOD during this time and I am sure there have been many.

I understand wanting to hear more good news even in difficult times, we are human and what is happening is horrific and beyond our understanding. If you look closely you can see the strength in the faces of those who have survived to keep on keeping on without knowing what their future holds for them. [IMG]

My heart is breaking at the lives lost and those who are suffering! This is catastrophic!!!!!!!! There are people who need help NOW!!!!!! People are dying!!!!! I think the media is doing a great job getting the urgency out. I have watched/read numerous accounts of heroism. What is happening in the hospitals is heart wrenching yet heroic at the same time. There is so much devastation!!!!! It is unfathomable. There are people trapped everywhere without water, food, electricity and medication. Disease is running rampant and only getting worse. We need to come together in prayer and other ways the Lord leads us to help. Imagine what those who are still without help feel as the night comes upon them. [IMG] PRAYING!!!

Mexdeaf wrote I have yet to see a story about someone who has done something GOOD during this time and I am sure there have been many.

You are just catching the wrong channels at the wrong time.

NBC carried as their front story on several broadcasts the story of a man whose neighbors saved him.

Many of the networks carried the story of Texas opening up the Astrodome and the Roanoak Center to the refugees.

There was a story of a man who was packed up and ready to leave when he found out a neighbor was staying behind to help a sick relative who couldn't be moved. He stayed to help them through the storm.

There were people who, though they were suffering themselves, stopped to try to save the seal that washed up on shore.

There were store owners who opened up their stores, before the looting started, and said, "Take what you need."

The newspapers in the areas hit turned their pages into places people could look for lost loved ones, and ways to find relief.

The Sunherald reported that 18 wheelers are arriving from all over the country. It also talks about a mystery sailboat operator who was saving people.

ABC and NBC both carried stories about civillians rescuing others from rooftops.

One network carried stories of how hospital personnel siphoning gas from their own cars so they could fuel generators until patients could be moved.

New Orleans will never be same city again forever. I believe, about 25% to 50% population of New Orleans already learn big lesson, and do not want back to their place again ever.

My friend told me, New Orleans might be another 'Venice'. Venice was once a beautiful dry city in Italy. Now, that city is buried under water, only remain buildings stand over the sea.

People have no common sense to built a city - New Orleans, which is 18 feet below sea level. They should not built there in the first place. Very sad for them.

President Bush is right, he said, recovering in New Orleans will take for long, long times.

I agree with you, that we better pray for them. And also, we should be willing to helping them by donation.

    Deafpost,

Today at lunch someone pointed out that when New Orleans was formed they had no idea it was in the path of a hurricanes. They built on a natural levee off a major port. As the city expanded, and people began to move further back toward the swamps, the city began to sink. When it started out, it wasn't 15 to 18 feet below sea level, it was on top of the natural levees.
