Jesus was telling the Galilaeans they were sinners and except they repent (METANOEO), they would perish.

Unbelievers are to repent of their unbelief in Christ, not from stopping some sins, or making empty promises to not walk in future sin before they are even saved; this is ubsurd! It is clear we are to repent and allow Christ to take care of our sin problem. Trying to add "turning from sins" to the clear plan of salvation is adding human effort.

This explains why people ask God for help, yet continue to sin. Tears are shed, lives ruined, and they still can't seem to stop. Christians often blame them for sinning, stating they want to sin. Yet if they wanted to sin, they wouldn't ask for help to do the latter! God's timeframe in working on the heart is not always ours.
At one point during or after repentance, we ought to make an effort to turn from sin. Something is wrong when no effort is made to do this.

Now that we have a better understanding of repentance--what it is and what it is not—let us consider the fruits that, in God’s eyes, are necessary for true repentance (cf. Matthew 3: 8; Acts 20:26).

1.Restitution is a fruit of repentance. Wherever possible, the one who repents must make restitution. If a man stole a car, he must give it back. If he committed murder, he cannot restore the lives of those he murdered, but he must pay the penalty--up to and including punishment by death—for those murders (Genesis 9:5-6).

2.Separation is a fruit of repentance. One must separate himself from sinful things. Paul commanded the Romans to cease serving sin. Said he, "Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God." (Romans 6:11-13) An alcoholic cannot continue to drink alcohol. A homosexual cannot continue in the depravity of homosexuality, even though he and his partner may love each other and be married according to the laws of the land. Likewise, a married couple cannot remain in an adulterous marriage and be pleasing to God; they must separate and dissolve the marriage, even though they love each other (1 Corinthians 6:9-11; Hebrews 13:4).

3.Confession is a fruit of repentance. One must confess his sins and admit that he is a sinner. Saul, David, Judas, and other Bible characters did (1 Samuel 15:24; 2 Samuel 12:13; Matthew 27:4; cf. Exodus 9:27; Numbers 22:34; Joshua 7:20; Luke 15:18,21). The apostles commanded Christians to confess their sins (James 5:16; 1 John 1:9).

4.Resolve is a fruit of repentance. One must resolve in his heart to turn away from sin and cease practicing it. This involves the individual’s will. He demonstrates this fruit by taking the right course of action. For example, in the parable of the two sons, the first son said that he would not go and work in his father's vineyard, "but afterward repented, and went" to work in his father's vineyard (Matthew 21:28-31). True repentance demands that we resolve to follow the Father’s will, not our own.

5. Contrition is a fruit of repentance. Contrition is the expression of deep sorrow for sinning against God. The psalmist David wrote, "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise." (Psalm 51:7) I believe David said this as he remembered and described his sorrow for committing adultery with Bathsheba—a sin against God (2 Samuel 11-12; cf. Genesis 39:7-9).


I feel the last one is common (feeling deep sorrow), but not a requirement. Others feel sorrow will occur due to examples in the bible. An effort to cease sinning, imo, needs to happen in order for true repentance to occur.

None of the verses you have chosen are talking about being saved. If you will read the context it is clearly talking about temporal judgements and physical death, not eternal condemnation in the lake of fire. Christians in the Bible have been wicked sinners and should turn from their sins to restore FELLOWSHIP or avoid early death sentance. The unsaved need only to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ without works, and they we befreely forgiven of ALL sin.

1John 1:8 testifies: "If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us" Bob, this is saying Christains are still sinners, and if you do not believe you are you are not really saved.

IMHO, all these argumentation comes from misunderstanding that not everytime the Bible speaks of salvation, it refers to the eternal sense of salvation.

Many times David cried for God to save him, but these salvation is from timely causes.

We need to remember that salvation is all OF God. God is the One who will have mercy on whom He will have mercy. He is the One who covenanted with Himself (the Triune God) to save a people unto Himself.
He wrote His people's names in the Book of Life, and as the Eternal Lamb of Glory His blood has already covered these peoples before the foundation of the world, and in His own schedule, He then shed His blood at the cross of Calvary, here in time, therefore completing the redemption of all whom He has chosen in Christ.

Eternal salvation is OF the Lord, it is unmerited by anyone, it is a gift of God to His people, and the people covered by this salvation is a gift of God to His Son,

Eternal salvation asks or requires no prerequisites from the sinner. It cares not about the sinner's theology, or his creed, or even the religiion he is born in or practices here in time and cares not for the elect child of God's chronological, racial, or political circumstance.

If your name is in the Lamb's Book of Life, then the blood of the Eternal Lamb of Glory was shed for you, and Christ therefore redeemed you and purchased you, in time, at the cross.

However, if you are a child of God, chosen by the Father, redeemed by the Son, and quickened by the Spirit, there is no way that having been illuminated by the gospel, coming under the instruction of the gospel, and learning of Who it was that saved you, that there can be no repentance evident in you.

If you are a child of God, and you come under the hearing of the gospel (please understand that I do not believe all elect are going to hear the gospel), there is no way I will believe you will stay in your wrong theology, or wrong creed, or wrong religion. YOU WILL LEAVE and repent.

It is in the timely aspects of salvation that repentance is required. A regenerate child of God who is Muslim is being called to repentance and a turning away from a false god. He cannot worship God and mammon.

A thief who has been regenerated is required to steal no more. Former busybodies no longer to be busybodies but instead mind their own business. Adulterers to no longer practice adulteries. Sodomites to no longer practice sodomy.

Take a close and honest look at what the New Testament writers have written.

None of them required repentance for eternal salvation.

All of them required repentance for timely salvation.

SAVE YOURSELVES FROM THIS UNTOWARD GENERATION.

REPENT, AND BE BAPTIZED !!

Either Christ alone secured the eternal salvation of His people, with no help from anyone (even His Father turned away from Him), or Christ PLUS repentance PLUS good works PLUS baptism = eternal salvation.

I think it would be hard for someone to come to the realization that "this truly WAS the Son of God" and not be saved. Faith in Christ involves repentance, and that sounds like "Oh no...what did I just do!"

Yes. I'm sure that plenty of people who martyred others throughout history came to Christ as a result of what they did.

Not in one of these verses where METANOEO is used does it mean to "turn from your sins". I have stated this many times and it can be proven yourselves by a simple Greek study of the word. META=CHANGE NOEO=thinking or mind. I have already dealt with Luke 13:3 in another post. It was Israel's self-righteousness that needed to be corrected. They thought they were safe being Abraham's seed by blood. They were rejecting Christ-- "we don't need a Savior" and Jesus warned the nation of Israel in the parable following it that she would perish. It happened in the Jewish massacre in 70 A.D. You are comparing apples with oranges. Physical perishing in a tower falling on you speaks of temporal judgement not eternal damnation in the lake of fire.:tonofbricks:

Now do a little word association--insert the correct definition (change your minds) every place the word METANOEO appears and you will find it makes perfect sense. Again, METANOEO does not mean "turn from your sins" it means to "change your minds". Israel would not admit they were lost, they needed to "repent" change their minds and acknowledge their sinfulness, and ask for mercy by receiving Christ as their Messiah. This is repentance in salvation. It cannot mean to stop sinning! This is what "turn from your sins" literally must mean. No mortal human has or ever will be able to do this.
