New Doctor Who

I heard that David Tennant just got up and quit. Why? Doesn't that injure his career? Was the BBC Wales abusing him in some way? Did someone go against his contract? Was the popularity getting to his head? Why no forewarning?

You heard incorrectly. He announced he was leaving on October 29th, 2008. Here's an article about it.

Matt Smith will be the 11th Doctor when the series returns with a full season in 2010.

It's been since January that Doctor Who was mentioned? Far too long, I think, and while there hasn't been that much to discuss, a few things have actually happened in the Doctor Who universe.

Easter Special: Planet of the Dead
It was pretty good. The monsters were good, Michelle Ryan was good and you have to think that the Master is being foreshadowed. We can also see how the Doctor has changed when he didn't take Christine with him. The Doctor as we've known him prior to Rose, Martha and especially Donna would have absolutely taken her.

The 10 Doctors
If you've been following the 10 Doctor for the last 2 years, then you already know the story has been finished. I almost miss not going to the site and checking for a new page everyday, including the times when days and days would go by without a new update. I won't link to it, but you can find The 10 Doctors easily enough and I encourage you to go find it.

The Next Special
The Waters of Mars won't be aired until November. In regards to Doctor Who, the BBC definitely subscribes to the old adage "Leave em wanting more".

New Companion
I thought maybe they were setting us up for Michelle Ryan to wind up as a Companion to the 11th Doctor, but the 11th Doctor's companion has been announced, Karen Gillen. If you think she looks familiar (though I didn't), she was in The Fires of Pompeii.

Probably a good choice by the new DW team to go with unknowns here. No established actor, or actress, would have wanted to follow either David Tennant or Catherine Tate, but "unestablished" actors would likely jump at the chance to star in Doctor Who. BTW, Karen Gillen is Scottish I think it would be cool if she was allowed to be Scottish on the show. She is a bonny lass.

The Next Special Bold Prediction
RTD said recently, and sorry that I don't have a link to it, that something's going to happen in The Waters of Mars that will fundamentally change the Doctor. I think I know what it is. The Doctor always makes crazy promises to people that he's going to get them out of whatever predicament they're in. Everytime he makes a promise like that I say, "how can you make a promise like that?", but he always finds a way to keep the promise. I think that The Waters of Mars will present a situation where the Doctor won't be able to save somebody that he promised he would save.

I'm also curious if his relationship with River Song is mentioned. In "Silence in the Library", she said, "You're younger than I've ever seen you." There's been all kinds of speculation from Whovians trying to figure out where River fits in the Doctor's life. Some have said that she only fits in 10's life and others have said that she knows the Doctor from future regenerations.

However, I think she's only referring to 10. I think she's human, thus, she won't know a Time Lord just by seeing one. I think she fits in between The Waters of Mars and the Christmas special. I'm interested to see if they reveal anything more about that relationship.

Figured I better materialise to prove I haven't been exterminated :) Anyone for a Who marathon? ;)

Enjoyed Planet of the Dead - even if they did goof with the distance and speed of the monsters a bit at one stage in there. With ya there cc, my first thought at that line at the end of PotD was it's a set-up for the return of the Master - which means RTD is just being clever and setting us up for something totally different..... Although...(possible spoiler/s)

My shock prediction for Waters of Mars - the Doctor will be almost drowned - but will be saved at the last second by the sudden appearance of Sutekh (the "of Mars" set me off, sorry) who evaporates the water so he can kill the Doc in a much nastier way....however the Osiran's plans don't work out as Omega turns up and starts a yelling match with Sutekh because he says his mask is cooler - and he was first anyway - so he should kill the Doctor. Eventually they decide to take out the Doc together, but by then there are only 2 minutes to go in the episode so RTD has the Doctor take out the Deus Ex Screwdrivina and blast Sutekh and Omega to dust, uttering "I'm sorry..." as the combined dust blows away...

And while I'm in a mean mood - in the season finale the Master and more CGI Daleks than anyone could possibly imagine will combine and throw everything at the Doc. As he falls to the ground for the last time 10 will say "You can't beat me, I'm Rassilon" and then zap the lot of them with 3 minutes of special effects. 10 then regenerates into 11 who stands up and says "No! Nononono! I didn't say that! I said 'I'm wrestling', not Rassilon...honest..." :D

Now that's out of my system (for now)...re: River Song - I'ld vote for a Time Lady using a Chameleon Arch - possibly future wife of a wayyyy future regeneration of the Doctor...and like the Time War it's something I hope they never show on screen - just leave it all to guesses and legend. As those episodes said "Spoilers!" :)

Do my eyes deceive me? A post from Pete? Good gracious, good to see a post from you. :wavey:

Possibly, but the problem is that Moffat seems to have written himself into a corner if he wants to bring her back like this. She's pretty much stuck living the rest of her life in the library. I'm not sure how he brings her back from that, but I wouldn't mind if he found a way, because I think Alex Kingston is a terrific actress.

the latest speculation I saw was they would be shown in April, August and Christmas.

The latest update is that "The Waters of Mars" will be shown in November.

No, no, no! Mars was just the relay station for Sutekh's imprisonment; he was really from Osiris.

cc, unlike a RTD CGI Dalek-fest I don't predictably turn up ;)

I know Matt, I just borrowed the "of Mars" to allow a Sutekh come-back ;) *Quotes me "...the Osiran's plans don't work..." :) * Good thing RTD is leaving though or we might have ended up with Sutekh V Omega... :tonofbricks:

BTW - "SPOILERS" ...

Is there any question that, if he had stayed another season, Omega would have been the "big bad" for S5? At least RTD didn't take the opportunity to make a ham-fisted attempt at romance by bringing back Romana. It was bad enough with Rose in JE.

Some of the denizens of Skiffy's Doctor Who forum, or Syfy if you prefer their new name, are going a little nutty (9 pages of discussion and going over there) about 11's clothes. I think just seeing stills with what he's wearing doesn't tell us too much until we see him in action and the clothes are sort of in context.

I look at 11 and pic with "her" and just keep telling myself "Moffat knows what he is doing...Moffat knows what he is doing..." :)

I have no doubts about The Mighty Moff.

BTW, it has been confirmed that The Master is returning, so our speculation is correct. If you're into anagrams, and anagrams have historically been important on Doctor Who, then an anagram of The Waters of Mars is Wars of the Master. Remember RTD saying that his plan from the beginning was to bring back the iconic monsters of Doctor Who, starting with the Daleks? It makes sense to bring back the multiple Doctor/Master episodes that we've seen in the past. For example, most of Classic Who Season 8 and 9 was Doctor/Master battles. Doctor #4 regenerated in the middle story of a trilogy of Doctor/Master battles. I don't think The Waters of Mars is the only 1 of 10's last episodes where the Master plays a part.

I just saw planet of the Dead. And I'm wondering what did the mystic lady tell the doctor at the very end? Something about being careful and his time is coming to and end. Then she said something about something Knocking 4 times. What was she referring to? Also I should be getting waters of mars in September. Any other specials this year?

She's foreshadowing 10's death and regeneration. I've always thought that "He is returning" is referring to the return of the Master, but that's all I'm sure of.

I guarantee that you won't be seeing The Waters of Mars in September. It's set to air in November, but there have been a couple of trailers released. Here's the most recent one released on July 27th.

They showed this one at Comic-Con 2009 a couple of weeks ago.

Thought I should report in with a couple of great Who-related Facebook quiz results :)

1) Which Doctor Who nutter are you? I got Sutekh - "You don't like exercise much. You prefer to use your brain and brood a lot. You're not one for raising your voice and you're pretty much bonkers."

2) Which Male Doctor Who Companion Are You? I got Harry "Smart & always helpful, you are trusted by all." =)
