Old folks who think they love old things

The song with the lyrics "lets have a little talk with Jesus" drives me up the wall, among others. What is a little talk as opposed to a big talk? That is about the most meaningless phrase I had yet heard in a hymn. "I'll Fly Away" sounds like an airline commercial. I guess the worst ever devised is "Drop Kick Me Jesus Through the Goal Posts of Life." I believe that is by that Christian giant, Marty Robbins. While we are at it, we can "turn on the radio and get in touch with God."
These songs, although they might have a word or two of truth in them are more like childrens gingles as, Jesus loves me this i know for the bible tells me so. As for me when i learned some good solid grace gospel songs i just cannot go back to singing gingles.

Dont you think that its all about the spiritual maturity of the individual... actually a great barometer where you are in your walk.

When i look at a song i ask myself, is there words or a meaning in this song that can be misleading or don't glorify God. Believing in the doctrines of grace i also look for anything in the song that might exalt man, if there is, the song is not for me.

But we have to first recognize the problem before we can talk about solutions. The problem is that one generation in the last century failed at the helm. If we can recognize that then we can examine why and how and talk about how to fix it.

Currently I am preaching through the Book of Acts. I am still on chapter one, taking my time and moving slowly.

Acts 1:12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
13 And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

The apostles walked about a kilometer, 5/8 of a mile, from the Mt. of Olives to Jerusalem to go into the upper room, where they prayed. There were 120 in all. And I thought what a prayer meeting that must have been. How I would have loved to been there--to meed the different apostles and those that worked with them.
Peter, who soon after that preached to the very ones who crucified Christ.
Thomas, who soon after that became a missionary to India.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, and her other sons were there.
And the list goes on. These were the first generation Christians, those whose lives had been personally touched and changed by the Lord himself. They were praying together; fellowshipping together.

Then I thought of my own life. I have sat under the preaching Dr. Myron Cedarholm, Dr. Weeks, John R. Rice, Monroe Parker, Bob Jones Jr., Bob Jones III, Peter Masters, Dr. G. Dollar, Dr. Hollowood, Lester Roloff, Ron Comfort, and many, many others. Sure you may not agree with them all, but that doesn't matter to me. The fact is that I sat under a wide variety of Godly men, and heard them preach and heard the pray, and prayed with them.

From my graduating class there are presently a number of pastors, presidents of Bible colleges, teachers in Bible colleges, missionaries scattered all over the world, powerful evangelists preaching the word, women working in various aspects of the Lord's work, etc.

And you are complaining about the past?
Where have you been looking? At liberal churches perhaps?
Of course in the churches and colleges I grew up and attended we had nothing to do with the SBC

I can see it all unfolding. Luke is young, so everything is the fault of the older generation. If God blesses him with a long life then, when he is old, everything will be the fault of the younger generation.

Do I see some narcissism here?

In this you admit your problem.

I cannot see how this applies.

It does not change any of the FACTS presented thus far.

The fact that prayer and the Bible were taken out of schools, not in the 90's but in the 60s. How does what you say here address this fact?

The fact the divorce rate was its highest, not in the 90's, but in the 70's. It shot up in those decades phenomenally.

The fact that abortion was legalized, not in the 90's, but in the 70's.

The fact that AIDS became an epidemic in the 60's and 70's.

The adults of the 60's and 70's lost this nation.

Deal with facts. I don't care about the names of your heroes. I care, as should all of us, about results.

Luke2427- I asked elsewhere, and perhaps you did not see it, but if I may I'd like to ask you again how old you are. Assuming that it is you pictured in your avatar, the size and quality of the photo shows you as either being in your twenties or in your fifties.

Why does that matter?

How does that affect the facts presented?

A much older friend, and fellow deacon at the time, once confessed at a meeting that he loved classical music (he thought that perhaps that was unacceptable in the conservative church we attended).
I humorously remarded that I like the classics too - the Beatles, the Stones etc...

'Old stuff' is contextual and often only as old as the participants in the conversation

 Old to a seventy-year-old is different than old to a twenty-year-old.

Simple curiosity. It might help in understanding the basis for some of you opinions.

What opinion?

Is it opinion that AIDS became an epidemic in the 60's and 70's?

Is it opinion that prayer and the Bible was outlawed in the 60's?

Is it opinion that divorce became rampant in that time period?

Is it opinion that abortion was legalized in that time period?

We live in an age that hates acknowledging facts. We don't like concrete objective things.

So facts are called opinions because we think that is more palatable.
