My belief on this topic is based on sound Biblical teachings. I have studied the issue at great length and have no doubt that there never was such a "phenomenon" in the Bible as interpreted today among many in the Charismatic crowd.

I don't understand why this thread that is not to be taken seriously has so many post.
IMHO I think that the subject of Speaking in tongues is the most popular subject on the Baptist board.
This subject will never go away from the BB. Those that opposed to speaking in tongues get more emotional about this subject than any other subject.
Masses of Christians all over the world are speaking in Tongues.
Time Magazine listed The Azusa Street Revival at the turn of the 20th century as one of the most significant events of the 20th century.
It is estimated that over 20% of SBC active members have leaning toward speaking in tongues.
Watch this number grow!!!!
This is about more than Speaking in tongues but it has to do with outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the Last Days as was prophecied by the Prophet Joel and quoted by Peter on the Day of Pentecost.
There is a resentment by some because people are leaving churches that oppose this work of The Holy Spirit. You can't put new wine in old wine skins and this means that people leave dead churches and this makes people in dead churches resentful and to the work of God as Jesus Baptizes his people in the Holy Spirit.
This subject will not go away simply because The Promise of the Father is with us.

Yes Violet, I'm glad you see the problem. However, as you can see, none of the others seem to want to touch the subject.

I just think there should be some leeway to allow all to come to their own conclusion, not the "party line" of some church.

If others studied the subject equally as well, there would be no one "speaking in tongues" as it were today. The gift ceased long ago. What you perceive as speaking in tongues (gibberish) is fraudulent, and does not even come close to what the true Biblical gift of speaking in the foreign languages as the early disciples did. There are no two sides to this story. There is correct doctrine, and there is wrong doctrine. Choose the truth, that which is based on doctrine, not on emotions.

And again you miss the whole thing. Not everyone who has studied the bible comes up with your answer. I know it is not possible to get you to see that we all have to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling, and whatever I say, you will make fun of me and my doctrine.

Of course it is entirely possible that God allows all of us to see the scripture differently for a reason.

When it comes to the subject of tongues it is not a matter of seeing things differently. It is either right or wrong; a black and white issue. There is no grey area here. Someone is definitely wrong. One cannot read through 1Cor.14 with an objective mind and still say that tongues is for today. Literally every verse in that chapter puts such limitations of the speaking of tongues that it is impossible for one to speak in tongues in a Biblical manner today. But hey! Who cares about the Bible anway!? Just follow your emotions! The Bible doesn't amount to anything anymore anyway, does it? If the Bible says for women to keep silence in the church (especially concerning tongues), we just rationalize it away and ignore it as if it didn't even exist. And so the Charismatics summarily dismiss each verse of the fourteenth chapter of 1Corinthians. They might as well rip that chapter out of their Bibles because they don't believe it anyway.
