TP,
From what I remember, you didn't like when people made assumptions about your defenses earlier in this thread--please have the same courtesy to me.

Tam,
My belief on this topic is based on sound Biblical teachings. I have studied the issue at great length and have no doubt that there never was such a "phenomenon" in the Bible as interpreted today among many in the Charismatic crowd.

MEE,
Did I express in an opinion somewhere that folks who have misinterpreted spiritual gifts cannot have salvation?
You weren't clear on the issue, and that is why I asked you the question. So, 'you' are saying that they are wrong, but they are saved?

I know you have studied the scripture at length and in depth, to come to your conclusion.

However, there are others, equally as well studied as you who have studied the scriptures in depth and at length and have come to another conclusion.

Do you see the problem in that?

Peace,

Tam

Sorry about the above post--messed up.

Mee,
I am saying that any one can be wrong on a myriad of issues and still be saved so long as they satisfy Biblical requirements for salvation.

MURFREESBORO, TN – When new believer Gentry Tate attended Murfreesboro Assembly of God’s Friday Night Signs and Wonders meeting, he wasn’t expecting to make use of his acute knowledge of professional basketball. However, when traveling preacher Morgan Sheppard gave the altar call for those who wanted to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, Tate turned to the NBA for guidance. “He laid hands on me, and I didn’t want to let him down, so I spouted the weirdest gibberish I could come up with: ‘Kirelenko, Mutombo, Potapenko, you name it’. I guess it worked - everyone around me praised Jesus.”

The 21 year old native of Murfreesboro was led to Christ by best friend Cole Smith earlier this year. “Cole said I needed to get baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost, so he dunked me down at Buffalo Creek. I didn’t talk in tongues, so I guess it didn’t take. He suggested I see an anointed preacher like Reverend Sheppard. On the way over, Cole kinda prepped me for the infilling. He said I just needed to do some baby talk and the Holy Ghost would take over from there. Boy am I glad I was watching the Spurs-Jazz game before I went.”

“His prayer language is beautiful,” said long time Assembly attender June Dunton. “When he rattled off that string of ‘Stojakovic Ilgauskis Pau Gasol,’ I was just mesmerized. I never heard anything like it before.” For his part, Tate simply didn’t want to embarrass Reverend Sheppard. “Everybody he slapped on the forehead did a tongue, but I was at a loss for words. Until I remembered Tim Duncan’s slam dunk. Then I went for it with a, ‘Hallelujah Manu Ginobili.’ I heard everybody around me saying ‘yes Lord,’ so I figured I had the Holy Ghost. Then I let loose with a ‘Hallelujah Manu Ginobili Hedo Turkoglu,’ and it was on. Everybody started jumping up and down. I thought ‘Oh yeah? Take this...’ and I fired off a ‘Hallelujah Manu Ginobili Hedo Turkoglu Slava Medvedenko! MEDvedenko! Whoooaaa MedveDENKO!’ It felt like a tongues triple-double.”

Though Tate’s tongues were received by all, the interpretation was difficult to decipher. “I really couldn’t get a read on it,” said Duncan Thiel, 47. “So we called in Brother Metcalf.”

Burl Metcalf, 101, was a toddler during the Azusa Street revival in the early 20th century, and is Murfreesboro Assembly’s chief tongues expert. “Try as I could, all I could come up with was ‘3 ball from downtown!’, and ‘Who’s your Daddy now, sucka!’ I suppose it means the Trinity in the New Jerusalem is still our heavenly Father, or something.

Pentecostal Man’s Glossolalia Echos NBA Rosters </font>[/QUOTE]This post starts out by a disclaimer that says
" this is a joke do not take it seriously"
I don't understand why this thread that is not to be taken seriously has so many post.
IMHO I think that the subject of Speaking in tongues is the most popular subject on the Baptist board.
This subject will never go away from the BB. Those that opposed to speaking in tongues get more emotional about this subject than any other subject.
Masses of Christians all over the world are speaking in Tongues.
Time Magazine listed The Azusa Street Revival at the turn of the 20th century as one of the most significant events of the 20th century.
It is estimated that over 20% of SBC active members have leaning toward speaking in tongues.
Watch this number grow!!!!
This is about more than Speaking in tongues but it has to do with outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the Last Days as was prophecied by the Prophet Joel and quoted by Peter on the Day of Pentecost.
There is a resentment by some because people are leaving churches that oppose this work of The Holy Spirit. You can't put new wine in old wine skins and this means that people leave dead churches and this makes people in dead churches resentful and to the work of God as Jesus Baptizes his people in the Holy Spirit.
This subject will not go away simply because The Promise of the Father is with us.

Yes, this does cause a dilemma, doesn't it? Who's correct?

I believe God has already revealed it to me. I had a word of knowledge today while I was reciting NBA players' names with my hand on the television set today watching Robert Tilton.

It is not God that reveals heresy and aberrant theology; it is the devil.

Yes Violet, I'm glad you see the problem. However, as you can see, none of the others seem to want to touch the subject.

I just think there should be some leeway to allow all to come to their own conclusion, not the "party line" of some church.

God bless you Violet,

If others studied the subject equally as well, there would be no one "speaking in tongues" as it were today. The gift ceased long ago. What you perceive as speaking in tongues (gibberish) is fraudulent, and does not even come close to what the true Biblical gift of speaking in the foreign languages as the early disciples did. There are no two sides to this story. There is correct doctrine, and there is wrong doctrine. Choose the truth, that which is based on doctrine, not on emotions.

And again you miss the whole thing. Not everyone who has studied the bible comes up with your answer. I know it is not possible to get you to see that we all have to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling, and whatever I say, you will make fun of me and my doctrine.

Never the less, I pray that God may richly bless you and yours in your endeavor to walk ever closer to Jesus!!

Peace,
Tam

Of course it is entirely possible that God allows all of us to see the scripture differently for a reason.

Perhaps we have different jobs in leading people into the Kingdom of God.

When it comes to the subject of tongues it is not a matter of seeing things differently. It is either right or wrong; a black and white issue. There is no grey area here. Someone is definitely wrong. One cannot read through 1Cor.14 with an objective mind and still say that tongues is for today. Literally every verse in that chapter puts such limitations of the speaking of tongues that it is impossible for one to speak in tongues in a Biblical manner today. But hey! Who cares about the Bible anway!? Just follow your emotions! The Bible doesn't amount to anything anymore anyway, does it? If the Bible says for women to keep silence in the church (especially concerning tongues), we just rationalize it away and ignore it as if it didn't even exist. And so the Charismatics summarily dismiss each verse of the fourteenth chapter of 1Corinthians. They might as well rip that chapter out of their Bibles because they don't believe it anyway.
