Just to clarify - I had not seen where Douglas had owned slaves - thus the reason I stated "Not sure if he owned slaves -" The point I was trying to make was that Douglas has stated " the Declaration of Independence was not meant to apply to non-whites."
And this from a person from the North. (Born in Vermont - moved to Illinois in 1833.
Now, what would be interesting is what his thoughts before his wife inherited the slaves - and could it be his belief changed after the inherentence???

No, Douglas was a Democrat and debated Lincoln--of course, they were both from Illinois, but both had presidential aspirations. This business about his slaves has been written about before on the BB. I think that he was a big spender and depended on the money from the south to support his lifestyle. Lincoln was a successful lawyer and had a good income. Lincoln was born in Kentucky, raised in southern Indiana, and then went on to work in Illinois. He was up from poverty and used to hard work.
