Will You TOSS One Back over the Holidays?

Just a simple poll on drinking alcohol. During the Thanksgiving, Christiams and New Years activities, will you have a drink of an alcoholis beverage? :type:

Nope. Never had a drop in my life. Don't intend to start now. :thumbsup:

I will be enjoying Great Lakes Christmas Ale this holiday season as well as some local fresh craft beer from Willoughby Brewing Company.

I selected "No" because I don't foresee being in a place or situation where alcoholic beverages are present. If hey are present (restaurant) I don't foresee consumption of alcohol as a natural fit for the activity or fellowship that we will be engaged in.

....I heard from a friend that McDonald's is testing the sale of beer and wine at select stores. I can't verify this, as it is strictly a rumor, but it would surprize me!

That was one of the oddest things for me living in Germany. You could order a Big Mac with beer (which came in a regular McD's cup).

Anyway, I won't be tossing one back over the holidays.

I will have wine at communion on Sundays (since it is unleavened as is the matzo).

I personally opt to abstain from alcohol and never have it in my home. I believe the Bible clearly teaches moderation and control. BUT . . knowing how I am with chocolate or Cheetos, I know that if I ever started drinking liquor (other than for health) I would be the stumble-down drunk in a matter of days.

My flesh is easily addicted. Trying to eliminate oxygen but not going so well for me . .

Dr. Bob, I think this is a great example of wisdom. You recognize your own weakness and avoid putting your self in the position to stumble. I am not a tea-totaller but I see this as great wisdom here that is applicable in many areas of our lives.

No shame here! Sacrificed a pair of them while I was at it. In the quest for equal opportunity among the antlered ones I also saw to it that an antlerless one got to ride in the bucket of the tractor too.

I know I'm walking on thin ice here but in spite of enjoying shooting a freezer full of Bambi AND the consumption of alcoholic beverages I have no desire to play cards, attend a motion picture show, cheat on my wife or dance in a public place. :thumbsup:

Totally different approach to this in Germany and Europe in general. Having lived in Germany and other European countries. I will most likely have some, beer, most assuredly, possibly even some wine. "Tossing one back"....probably not, but enjoying some, yes most likely.

After I'm 21, which I will be by next year's holiday season, I might. While the Bible gives many warnings about drunkeness, it also seems to suggest that moderation is fine.

I wouldn't keep any in my house, though, for a few reasons. One, I wouldn't want to be tempted to drink too much. Two, I still live with my mom and younger teenage brother for now.

Don't drink, so probably not going to be tossing one back so to speak any time soon. I don't really care if you do, your drinking habits are between you and The Lord. I do encounter lots of folks who had a serious drinking problem, so out of deference to them I abstain. That is a choice that I have made, don't expect everyone to make the same choice.

Quest..., my advice to you would be not to even consider a drink later in life. None of us need it.

Case in point. I knew a man back in the 1970's that told of his uncle getting an expensive bottle of wine for Christmas. Said uncle popped the top and everyone had a sip. Including this "man" who was about 14 at the time.

He told of from that moment after taking that first sip he was hooked! He told of drinking that entire bottle of wine when no one was looking and by the time he had finished it all..., it made no difference to him that his uncle was out of control with anger.

By the time he was 19 he had been arrested over 16 times for being under the influence and going crazy in public. If he's still alive he's still an alcoholic even if he stopped drinking through the help of AA. He was just an innocent kid and his addiction ruined his entire life. Yes, he went on to be a semi-successful insurance salesman during the day and a stark raving drunk at night.

I never drank a drop until after I went into the military and I'm so thankful the Lord blessed me with NOT being addicted to the stuff..., even before I came to know Him. In my military days I'd only get "liquored up" once or twice a year and then become very sleep very soon afterward and sleep the night away.

You don't need it..., don't even try it. You might become hooked on it.

The resturant part your choice: I avoid gatherings and restaurants where alcohol is served is well nigh impossible to observe in California. Any eating establishment other than chain fast food is likely to have at least a beer and wine license even Denny's.

Squire, that is pretty much true over here on the RIGHT coast as well.....right here in the middle of the so-called "Bible-Belt". There are some places but they are getting harder to find.

Yep!

It is amazing how the years redefine what we will and will not do. At one time in our church, especially before we replaced part of our local Constitution with the BFM 2000, our members would not even enter a restaurant that served liquor. The barrier was defined by the four outer walls of the building. Now, with the advent of almost all restaurants serving alcohol, we now have a new barrier. Instead of the four outside walls, it is now the half partition that surrounds the physical bar in the establishment. I guess the Lord got tired of using so much construction material.

Seriously, locally here, unless you go to a McDonalds, Cracker Barrel, or other fast food place, you will encounter a place that serves alcohol. Even the local Chinese and Mexican restaurants serve it.

Same here in South Carolina brother......although as a personal preference my wife and I do try to avoid establishments that "advertise" themselves as "taverns" or "bars" that try to highlight their alcohol sales.....places like Appleby's BAR & Grill...or "Chief's Wings and Firewater" to name a few.
I'm just not personally comfortable that attending places like that honors and pleases the Lord.....and THAT, after all is what SHOULD be important to a Christian who is trying to live a life that honors God. It is NOT about any "legal" requirement that is made of us by God, but rather a matter of a heart that is submissive to the Lord. I fall far short of that every day to my own shame. Thankfully, He is merciful and gracious to me as He is to all of us. Blessings to you brother...and all here.

For the record... the only thing I'll be "tossing back" for the holidays will be a good ole' southern sweet iced tea with lemon...actually and probably a bunch of them! I guess I couldn't ever be a good Mormon...amen??!:laugh:

I heard that wine doesn't taste that much different from grape juice, so you might as well just drink grape juice. But different people seem to have different opinions on that.

Quest..., just the smell of wine gives me heartburn out of this world. It's really odd but should I sniff the contents of a bottle the heartburn is immediate. I consider that a plus.

You haven't drank to this point with good reason and don't feel like you have to just because you turn 21 next year.
