Featured Words Leaving The English Language In Bible Translations

The above is part of post 16 of mine. It dealt with New Testament only. Here I will list the usage of this word in the whole canon.

The NET is in the middle range with 545. The average would be a bit more than 559. I'd conclude that the word whom is leaving the language slowly but surely.

The frequency of the word unto in 15 Bible translations :
CSB, CEB,NCV, NET, NLT, NRSV and WEB didn't use the word at all.
EHV, ISV, NASB and NIV used it once.

The LSB is smack dab in the middle.
Four were above 20 and 9 were below.
NABRE, NKJV and NCB are out of sync with the rest of the rest of the translations. WEB is still safe.

About 16 other translations that I usually reference do not have that particular word at all.

So it's safe to assume that wherefore is dead in Bible translations.

 

I had not used the RSV in my search of 16 translations. It used the word six times.
In those six places the NIV had "That is why" "So then" and "therefore". It's my guess that most translations used the word 'therefore' instead of the antiquated 'wherefore' in those 244 occasions.

 

Well now. For this particular survey I used the following Bible translations :
CEB, CSB, EHV, ESV, ISV, KJV, LSB, LEB, NASB, NABRE, NET, NIV, NLT, NKJV, NRSV and WEB.

Ten words are probably on their way out of the English language :
Dwelt, Midst, Thus, Nevertheless, Inasmuch, Maiden, Afar, Behold, Shall and Lest (I've featured them in this thread).

Eight translations used most of these words the least.

The CSB comes out on top for all ten words. In five instances it didn't use the words at all.
The NLT is in second place and on four occasions it didn't use the words at all.
The CEB places third. and it didn't use three of the words at all.
The NIV comes in at 4th place. One word wasn't used at all.

Those four translations had the least number of usages of those ten words.

There's a tie for 5th place : the EHV and ISV. They used eight of the words very little and each didn't use two of the words at all.

The 6th place holder is the NET. It used very little of 7 of the words in question. And in one instance didn't use one of the words at all.

Four versions outdid the KJV. The LSB went overboard.

The NRSV was in the middle of the pack overall.

 

I do not know how to categorize this one.

The words sovereign and sovereignty.

Three versions are way out ahead of every other translation. I surveyed 17 versions..

The NET used either sovereign or sovereignty 342 times.

The NIV : 297
NLT : 291

In a distant third place was the NRSV at 62.

 

This is not on the same theme.

I have long regarded the word humankind as an undesirable word. It's clumsy. Humanity or simply
people work better. Mankind ; I don't know. That's iffy in my opinion.

Of 15 versions from BibleGateway, the
LEB used humankind 123 times.
NRSV used it 44 times (the Anglicised form 57 times).
NET: 33
NABRE : 17
CEB : 11
ISV : 3
CSB : 1

The eight remaining versions didn't use this word at all.

I looked at 19 versions with the usage of this wording.
