The Bible says that God created birds before He created humans. The Bible says that birds sing. They produce music that has no words, but it is still music. Did God create their music?

He created their ability to make what seems like music to us, when it's usually a birdie's mating call.

The Spirit uses the same Hebrew verb [sir] for birds singing as He does for humans singing:

Zephaniah 2:14 And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations: both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in the upper lintels of it; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds: for he shall uncover the cedar work.

Psalm 33:3 Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

Scripture does not support asserting that what birds do only seems like music--Scripture says that it is music.

Furthermore, regardless of what purpose(s) birds may have for their singing, the fact remains that the Bible says that they sing. We must base our views on what the Bible says.

Are you familiar with the hit song by Barry Manilow: "I Write the Songs."

It was written by Bruce Johnston, of the Beach Boys.

He stated in an interview that the song he wrote was about the Holy Spirit.

And how the Holy Spirit inspires human beings to make music (for the benefit of the human race).

Your question brought this fact to mind.

That's interesting. I am familiar with the song, but I had not heard about who wrote it and the background of his writing it.

Scripture certainly does highlight the Spirit's role in the music-making activities of believers (Eph. 5:18-21; etc.)!

Of course, bird 'songs' sound like music to us, and ancient people, not knowing the purpose of most bird songs, assumed they were singing for entertainment. God caused their sounds to be pleasing to us.

Saying that what a prophet inspired by the Spirit wrote are just words of ancient people who wrongly assumed something denies the perfection of Scripture. You should not hold such a low view of the Bible.

Scripture teaches that God created birds before He created humans--they were not created exclusively or even primarily to provide entertainment for us by supposedly producing music-like sounds that are pleasing to us but are not really music. Rather, first and foremost, God created birds to produce music that pleases Him and glorifies Him.

God says that birds sing. Your opinions and understanding of why they make the musical sounds that they do are not more authoritative than what the Bible says.

Well, actually, it was MEN who said birds sang.Nowhere is GOD quoted as saying such.

I don't think anything an ANIMAL does pleases or displeases God. He is concerned with what MEN do.

No one seriously believes spiders & birds THINK, but yet spiders make very-intricate webs & many bird species make intricate nests. That's because God built INSTINCTS into them, not because they're "smart". That same nest-building bird will repeatedly attack its own reflection in a mirror.

But I WILL agree they glorify God by displaying His ability to make wondrous, beautiful(to man) things.

And i will repeat that few, if any, ancient men knew why birds sing.

Sorry, you are wrong. What Zephaniah wrote about birds singing in 2:14 is the Word of God; it was not his own ideas.

Zephaniah 1:1 The word of the LORD which came unto Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah.

Zephaniah 2:9 Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them. 10 This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts. 11 The LORD will be terrible unto them: for he will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen. 12 Ye Ethiopians also, ye shall be slain by my sword. 13 And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness. 14 And flocks shall lie down in the midst of her, all the beasts of the nations: both the cormorant and the bittern shall lodge in the upper lintels of it; their voice shall sing in the windows; desolation shall be in the thresholds: for he shall uncover the cedar work. 15 This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.

Zephaniah prophesied the Word of God--he was not stating his own opinion when he spoke of flocks, all the beasts of the nations, birds, and desolation in 2:14.

More importantly, if you believe that only what is recorded in the Bible as direct speech from God is the Word of God, you have a very seriously wrong notion about the Bible (2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:20-21).

but of course God said they will sing, as that's what men called the sounds many birds make.

And I believe the writings of the prophets & apostles are God's word as well even if not a direct quote of Him.

No, Zephaniah 2:14 does not reveal that "God said they will sing, as that's what men called the sounds many birds make." It does not say anything about what men called those sounds. God is the Speaker of Zephaniah 2:14, and He is saying that birds will sing.

Scripture also teaches that truth elsewhere:

Psalm 104:12 By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their habitation, which sing among the branches.

Moreover, as I have already said before, God created birds (Gen. 1:21-23) before there were any humans (Gen. 1:24-31). Birds were already singing before there were any men who supposedly would merely call what they do singing even though supposedly it really is not singing.

I am surprised by the poll results so far that there are only 2 people who are willing to say that they believe that Scripture teaches that God created all music.

It's also striking to me that no one has made a concerted effort to argue using Scripture that God created all music.

God used a common expression men used for bird sounds, simple as that. Jesus did the same in Matt.24 when He said that stars shall fall from the sky. He knew, of course, that "falling stars" are meteors, and that "falling stars" was a common human term for them,

Same for bird songs. They're something birds do instinctively, same as building intricate nests. God gave each bird species that does sing the ability to produce a certain 'melody' distinct from that of any other species, to help them find mates, same as He did the various species of cicadas, crickets & grasshoppers, etc., each with a unique "song".

And God gave some people the ability to sing, play instruments, and/or write songs. Apparently, David could do both.

That's because there's NO such Scripture. It's a gimme that Jesus created everything there is, & that He created all the abilities that men & animals alike have. Thus, He gave some people the ability to make & perform music, & apparently He gave angels the same ability, as we see in Scripture angels singing or sounding trumpets, etc.

You do not have any biblical justification for putting in quotes, "melody" and "song," when referring to birds but not for humans. This is just your opinion versus the Word of God. Your opinion is wrong. We will have to leave it there.

No, it is not a gimme just because you say it is. Either you have Scripture to support what you believe or you do not.

If you do not have Scripture that directly teaches something, you do not get to just assert it. You have to argue biblically for it.

    I have PLENTY of reasons.

Is the HOLY TRINITY mentioned in Scripture? Do you believe in it although it's not mentioned ?

And, apparently, YOU believe in something not found in Scripture-that God created all music.

And the gimme Jesus created everything comes from John 1:3.

Yes, I believe in the Trinity, and I believe in it because the Bible provides an immense amount of revelation that requires that we believe in the Trinity.

No, I do not believe that God created all music. I do believe, however, that God did create some music.

No, John 1:3 does not teach that Jesus created everything. Jesus did not create the golden calves that Aaron and Jeroboam made. He did not create the pornography that wicked humans have made. Etc.

But Jesus created the gold the calves were made from. And He created the things men made into porn. He created the material men make smack out of.

Almost anything that exists that men can handle can be used for good or for evil.
