20 minute vid argues that Rev 20 teaches annihilationism!

It seems like nonsense to me to say that annihilation is not a fearful thing. If you want some details, here is a relevant blog post: Does annihilationism make the threat of hell meaningless? Here's an image I made to go with the blog post:

20 minute vid argues that Rev 20 teaches annihilationism!

There are quite a few other verses besides Matthew 10:28 where the plain, straightforward meaning supports conditional immortality. Here is one (consider what we mean when we speak of a person perishing and the fact that these people who perish do not have eternal life): ESV John 3:16 "For God...

20 minute vid argues that Rev 20 teaches annihilationism!

That's a good question. Of course, in general we should want to understand all that the Bible teaches as accurately as possible. I do not believe that eternal torment vs. conditional immortality should be treated as a primary level issue like the Trinity, salvation by faith in Jesus, or the...

20 minute vid argues that Rev 20 teaches annihilationism!

ἀπόλλυμι (apollumi), like nearly all words, has a range of meanings. When this word is used to refer to what happens at the final judgment, it points to annihilation. I give detailed evidence for this in this word study video:

I'm not in any way connected to Jehovah Witnesses. And while it it true the Jehovah Witnesses teach a form of annihilationism, it is also true that Muslims teach a form of eternal torment.

20 minute vid argues that Rev 20 teaches annihilationism!

Ironically, it is only your "personal opinion" that I have failed. More importantly, it saddens me that you use the term "heretical." That term should be reserved for the most serious doctrinal errors. By using that term, if you are mistaken about the seriousness of this doctrine or about the...

20 minute vid argues that Rev 20 teaches annihilationism!

I don't think the common idea that Gehenna referred to a valley of burning trash outside of Jerusalem during Jesus' time on earth has good historical support. But even if it did, trash is burned up to ashes, it is not tormented.

20 minute vid argues that Rev 20 teaches annihilationism!

Jude 7 stays that Sodom and Gomorrah serve as an example. An example is not effective if people do not know about it. What Jude's readers know about Sodom and Gomorrah comes from Genesis. There we see that these cities were completely destroyed. There is nothing in the story at all that even...

20 minute vid argues that Rev 20 teaches annihilationism!

Did you watch the video in the opening post? The whole point is that Revelation 20:10 does not teach eternal torment for people.

What do you believe Revelation 14:9-11 teaches? You quoted this passage without any comment or explanation.

20 minute vid argues that Rev 20 teaches annihilationism!

I agree. The process of dying is not said to be instant nor is it said to be easy. There is a lot of room for degrees of punishment in the process, although we should not lose track of the fact that the punishment is death itself, the loss of eternal life.

20 minute vid argues that Rev 20 teaches annihilationism!

That's a reasonable request. Here I go (but the video is better): 1. Revelation mostly consists of an inspired report of a vision that God gave to John and this vision often uses symbols. 2. There is a pattern of interpreting symbols: something John sees in the vision is sometimes interpreted...

In the debate over the nature of hell, those who believe the Bible teaches eternal torment for the unsaved often point to Revelation 20:10 as one of the key supporting verses for their view. But I'm convinced Revelation 20 only supports eternal torment when either the context is ignored...

Ashes & What Happens in Hell

Brother Glen, You wrote: The Scripture you quote for this is Luke 16:19-31, the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus. That story takes place in the intermediate state prior to resurrection and final judgment. The doctrine of conditional immortality does not address what happens in the...

Ashes & What Happens in Hell

Actually, the Bible never says that all humans have an immortal soul or that all people will live forever. Rather, the Bible teaches that eternal life is only received as God's gracious gift to those who believe in Jesus. I have a 7 minute video on this exact topic:

II hope to have time to respond to all the points in your comments. Soon I will be shifting to some other commitments this evening, but hope to reengage tomorrow. I may still have a little time tonight. Feel free to remind me if I miss some important points. In my word study I focus on data...

Ashes & What Happens in Hell

I agree that αἰώνιος (aionios) means "everlasting" both times it is used on Matthew 25:46. Here is the verse: CSB17 Matthew 25:46 "And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." Notice that only the righteous get eternal life. There is only one type of...

Ashes & What Happens in Hell

Yes, I mentioned in a previous comment, I have presented an in depth word study of apollumi in another video. I present detailed evidence and arguments to show that apollumi, when referring to what happens to the unsaved at final judgment, does mean annihilation. Here is that video again:

Ashes & What Happens in Hell

That's not true for two reasons: 1. Many Christians follow a path like that of the late John Stott, who saw biblical evidence for annihilationism and remained solidly within the evanglical fold, in fact he was a great leader and Bible expositor during his lifetime. 2. The Bible does not teach...
