Doesn't 1 John 5:1 grammatically say that regeneration logically precedes faith?

I did make the context part of my argument in my last post. Second, I used language that made it clear I am not talking about time or chronology but logical precedence and causality. The time between regeneration and faith is not the issue. That regeneration is the cause and faith the effect...

Doesn't 1 John 5:1 grammatically say that regeneration logically precedes faith?

Of course I agree that this verse is said in a context. I hope I didn't imply that. But the mechanics of the verse are such that it does say something about the author's understanding of how one's faith in Christ can be proven. And the way he forms that argument (amongst others) is to say...

    Ash Wednesday

So being the goober I tend to be at times, I had some students w/ something dark on their foreheads. Thinking I was being nice, I tried to let them know so they wouldn't be embarrassed. I forgot where I live and with whom I love amongst. It is Ash Wednesday and they are Catholic or from some...

Doesn't 1 John 5:1 grammatically say that regeneration logically precedes faith?

1Jn 5:1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. In the Greek if that helps you: 1Jn 5:1 Πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων ὅτι ᾿Ιησοῦς ἐστιν ὁ Χριστὸς, ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ γεγέννηται, καὶ πᾶς ὁ ἀγαπῶν τὸν...

    Last days

I wasn't scolding the motives. I was scolding the ignorance or lack of motive. And I can tell you that the world isn't jealous of America b/c you have more stuff. I see poverty that is jaw dropping every day. These people are quite pleasant and happy people w/out having "more in this...

Does God judge and comdemn Sodom For Sins, or for gay lifestyles?

Yeshua1, I love you bro, but I can't let bad typing like this get by scott-free. Pure genius!!! ;)

    regeneration =salvation=rebirth from abbove!

Just to check: are you saying every time the Bible uses the term soteria, it always means regeneration? And is spiritual salvation really equal to regeneration? Or is that just one of the terms under the umbrella of salvific terms?

    Adoption

I didn't want to get into this thread, but here is $.02. Adoption was typically only practiced by wealthy and royalty, mainly to pass on your inheritance. Caesar Augustus is a great example being adopted by Julius Caesar. It was not done for gracious reasons, it was done for selfish reasons...

    Last days

I disagree. I live in Central America where the perception of Americans are that they are entirely ego-centric. I am not justifying all of their excuses, but I will say that questions like that are the reasons why Americans (& American Christians) are viewed as not thinking outside of their...

    Now Turmoil at Bryan College

This is why I don't like charters that are so rigid that as the times change, the school cannot.

The Best book(s) on the Gospel

Are you quite serious? The use of so many writers, not just Paul, with the church as the new temple of God... have you read the NT??? Have you not read where Jesus says that something better than the temple & Solomon is here? Have you not read John 2 about the temple he was referring to was...

    Interpreting Revelation

Agreed. Those who see it as multiple sermons are basically relying on form criticism.

    Last days

Nevermind the Bible says so many times that the last days were during the time of the NT (and likely continue on). Act 2:17 "'And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,... Pentecost as "last days" Heb 1:2 but in these last days he has...

    Interpreting Revelation

On the rhetorical devices in Hebrews, Dr. Black's articles are quite helpful: "Literary Artistry in the Epistle to the Hebrews" Filologia Neotestamentaria 13 no 7, 1994. "Hebrews 1:1-4: A Study in Discrouse Analysis" Westminster Theological Journal 49 no 1, 1987. I've done some work myself in...

    Eschatology? (Attempt 2)

That battle that is outlining Revelation is quite extensive. Sometimes, it gets simplified based on the number 7 as if that is the key. Perhaps it is. But then again, perhaps there are verbal clues as well. There are as many different structures of Rev as there are scholars trying to figure...

    The sinners prayer

Not in so many words, but the spirit behind the message of "pray after me" is just that.

    Interpreting Revelation

Read this Themelios (32 no 2) article, "Preaching Advice from the 'Sermon' to the Hebrews"... very instructive. But it is just a summary of what many Hebrews scholars have been saying. http://s3.amazonaws.com/tgc-documents/journal-issues/32.2_Selvaggio.pdf Basically, there is much more to it...

    The sinners prayer

I'm not advocating it, I'm just saying it is almost a necessary element. I like Webdog's answer. It is good.

    The sinners prayer

A sinner's prayer almost has to be used on a tract, doesn't it?
