Obama picks retired general for help.

"But"? You just proved my point. Why not use Odierno, instead of bringing in a retiree and telling an active JCS "this is the guy who's gonna tell you what to do"? Odierno and the other JCS' will do it; they all know Allen, and respect him (at least, as much as they respect each other); but the...

Actually, Van, you did make such suggestions by stating that "set" is superior. Now the question still remains: if the context hasn't changed, why is this one word so important? Why is it that I get the full meaning of the verse with "appointed," but you indicate I'd get more out of the verse...

    Anyone here use Shelfari?

GreekTim - thanks for the link. Have you tried Good Reads?

Free Grace Theology vs. Armianism vs. Calvinism

There are several points in your post that indicate you're not as much of a calvinist as you proclaim. For example, God does not take pleasure in souls suffering in hell; but a just God does not allow sin and the un-just in His presence. It's like the "death penalty" discussions in a different...

Obama picks retired general for help.

So you believe he's more qualified than anyone currently serving?

Obama picks retired general for help.

Didn't say he wasn't qualified or a good choice. Said it was weird that, when he has literally thousands of active duty (not retired) military personnel with the same experience and knowledge, and a JCS whose job it is to advise the president about such military matters, that the president...

Obama picks retired general for help.

Question would be: why's he asking a retired general for help when he's got the Joint Chiefs of Staff and their analysts/advisors/experts of literally thousands? So he goes to a retired general instead of his already available active duty military resource? Am I seeing this wrong? Or does...

Conveys the idea of what? That on a particular day, at a particular time, Herod put on his robes and started talking? So how does using "appointed" change that idea? On a set day, Herod did something. On an appointed day, Herod did something. Which context is changed by changing those words...

Does America have the desire for a long fight ....

I would say, it depends on what the end goal is. "Eradication of terrorism"? Never happen. There will always be terrorism, as long as some fanatic thinks he's the only one with the truth. Give us a clear end state; use the "SMART" method (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and...

    How to handle this unbeliever?

THAT is all we need to know; you don't need to defend your statements any further than what you just wrote. THAT is where all the other problems (biblical inerrancy, etc.) derive. I, too, would be questioning his salvation with an answer like that.

    How to handle this unbeliever?

That's an excellent question; what's your answer?

By all means, educate me, and please point out exactly how I'm using context incorrectly. Not true. I HAVE addressed that, sir. It's because, as you yourself admitted, they both mean the same thing. Um...that was a misuse of the word "set." Strange; isn't that basically one of the...

    New Doctor Who

Another website referred to the first three episodes--especially this last one--as "the Doctor's deconstruction of heroes." Interesting observation. Not to mention his introduction to and interaction with the daughter of the Brigadier just last season, wasn't it?

    Jack the Ripper Identified

from io9: Three Thing to Keep in Mind Wouldn't you know it, Edwards has a new book to promote. Naming Jack The Ripper comes out Tuesday, and is the latest in a long line of books that speculate on the identity of the infamous killer. Edwards and Louhelainen saw fit to announce their discovery...

Um...no. I asked if the use of one word over the other changes the context of the verse. If it doesn't, then discussing this is pointless. Who cares about the context of the discussion? I thought this was a word study regarding the bible verse you posted. Um...so what's the point of this...

Sorry; I just saw this. First, your comment about "context" was uncalled for, unnecessary--and incorrect. Your example of context was erroneous in that you didn't actually discuss the context of the verse in question The context of the particular word is that people came together on a...

    Pastor Qualifications

That's good stuff. Pretty much summarizes "steward of God" (Titus 1:7); "apt to teach" (1 Tim 3:2); and "blameless" (1 Tim 3:2, Titus 1:6), "just" (Titus 1:8), and "holy" (Titus 1:8). But much better worded and said than I ever could.
