New Doctor Who

Sec's demise was one of the things I was worried about happening.....oh well :)
The scene that gave me Tom & Chris flashbacks was the Doctor facing Caan at the end - 4 questioned whether he should take out them out in Genesis Of The Daleks then 9's response when thinking he was facing the last one in Dalek - now 10 made an offer like that to one...

hmmm...don't remember off top of head Doctor almost calling Martha Rose...Will have to check it out again.

With you on Gridlock cc. My 2¢ worth is 10's scenes after the Face of Boe's revelation and describing Gallifrey to Martha have been his best so far.

Doh! Can't believe I didn't make the connection to GotD.

In regards to 9, I was thinking of his line, "Coward. Any day." in Parting of the Ways. Had the chance to wipe out the Daleks and didn't take it. It's a real testament to the Doctor's maturity that he was so willing to help the Daleks.

It's not that he started saying Rose or anything, but just the way he looked at her made me think he was about to call her Rose, and caught himself before doing it. I'll watch it again this week and see if I can pick up on that again.

cc, haha you didn't pick up GotD, and the PotW scene didn't hit me until you just mentioned it :) Maybe 9 had flashbacks of the end result of Time War that stopped him in PotW? Would have loved to hear CE ask RTD "What's my motivation" and the reply heh.

Even though I live just across the Irish Sea I just saw the first episode of the first season on Irish television (we don't have cable).

I have to say I loved it and look forward to 8.00 Saturdays now :).

So what did you guys make of The Lazarus Experiment? I thought Mark Gatiss (who also wrote The Unquiet Dead and The Idiot's Lantern) was pretty good as Lazarus, and another good piece of moralising from the Dr about the dangers of wanting to live forever. But I wonder who Mr Saxon is (the Master?) and what he/ his friend said to Martha's mother about the Dr?

I finished watching Lazarus today.

The Doctor said something about not having reversed the flow in a long time. I guess this references 3's habit of reversing the polarity of the neutron flow pretty much all the time.

And how about the Doctor turning it to 11, ala This is Spinal Tap.

And, what in the world was said to Martha's mother for her to slap him like that? Must be pretty bad, because I don't know of anybody who would slap a stranger like that. I also wonder how much of it, if any, was the truth.

Apparently, the next episode won't be until a couple of weeks, and it looks very good.

Reverse the polarity :D They're really looking after us old-timer Whovians.

The Doctor might have done better with Martha's mum if he said "We were travelling through space and time" instead of "We were doing stuff...." Oh well, at least he finally seemed to wake up to what everyone has been telling him about Martha for last 6 episodes. For someone always claiming to be brilliant he is sure stupid now and then....so if Mister Saxon is Master Saxon 10 is going to have to lift his game or he'll be 11 ;)

I was just about to wonder if maybe the .. "adjusted" .. version of Lazarus was a bit too much like the Empress of Racnoss, but then thought hit me that as I'm the one always enjoying the return of Daleks who are a lot like other Daleks I better just shut up..... ;)
Rest of season looks like a roller coaster....but Capt Jack back... :tonofbricks:

42.

Awesome.

Just awesome.

Wow.

New favorite of the season. The tension created by the countdown is, well, fantastic.

I've read about next week's "Human Nature". Not really looking forward to it.

I am, however, looking forward to learning more about Mister Saxon. If he is who we are being led to believe he might be, I have a theory, eminently plausible, about how he got free.

Martha Jones = awesome.

The Doctor was too, but we expect it out of him. He had a lot of guts doing what was necessary to save her.

Pete, Martha just might wind up landing at #2 in your list of Top 5 companions after 42. She did on my list.

So, I wasn't looking forward to "Human Nature" at all. I had my idea about what it was going to be like and my idea (can't say what it was without spoiling the story) was completely wrong. Props to RTD and company for a completely engaging story.

I was on some other forum the other day and found some, well, idiot, say the following.

"The old Doctor Who used to be all substance and no show. The new Doctor Who has become all show and no substance."

This is why I don't visit other boards as a rule, because I detest things like this. What show has that guy has been watching anyway? The stories of 9 and 10, at their very best, are every bit as good as what is called "classic" Doctor Who.

I can hardly wait till next week.

Didn't like 42 much at all - far too much of the claustraphobic "running around a spaceship being chased by an alien" thing which has IMO been overdone (think Alien itself and also last Season's Impossible Planet/ The Satan Pit)

Human Nature, OTOH - brilliant! Any ideas who Timothy might be?

42 - hmmmm...I dunno...here it mostly felt like a flashback to a generic Space 1999 episode (not that I have a problem with Space 1999 ;)). But swap the Doctor for Commander Koeing and Martha for Doctor Helena and the rest of the ingredients were pretty much the same. Eg crewmen gets possessed by alien of the week, kills people left right and centre, eventually John & Helena (Doctor and Martha) realise how the crew managed to annoy the alien in first place and fix it all. FX were better than good ol' 1999 though, one or two of those sun shots were absolutely fantastic!

Human Nature on the other hand....WOW! DOUBLE WOW!! Could this possibly be a new contender for title of best Who story ever?! Drawing a long bow here I know, but that was incredible. They didn't have the budget of Batman Begins for their scarecrows, but just didn't need it, they were miles in front. Almost brings back memories of the good old days of monsters made from carpet and bubble wrap ;) And that scene with the book gave me goosebumps on one page. From go to woah the episode was just Doctor Who at it's best. Can't wait for The Family of Blood, if it matches the start I may have a new champion.

Speaking of champions....The other day was in dvd shop and picked up Genesis Of The Daleks! Sat down with it the other night and watched all 6 episodes in a sitting. It hasn't lost it over the years.

Just got done watching Human Nature again. It is brilliant. Fantastic story.

Remember what the Doctor told Rose about when you time travel, you soak up "background radiation"? That's what the family smells, the radiation.

When Baines comes back and catches a whiff of the radiation from Timothy, he has an idea that maybe Timothy is the Doctor, but the scent isn't as strong as it should be. Baines sniffed the same radiation from Martha, but again, not enough to be a Time Lord.

Timothy is some sort of time traveller. Perhaps he's a Time Lord stuck without a TARDIS, thus he hasn't travelled for quite some time and the scent isn't as strong as it used to be. Maybe he got dumped out of the Eye of Harmony after the Time War (that's my theory on the Master btw).

I don't know that there's another explanation for what Timothy can see. Can't wait to get my hands on the new episode showing tonight (or, rather, showing about an hour from now as I write this).

Edited to add because Pete posted while I wrote my reply:

Could this possibly be a new contender for title of best Who story ever?!

I think it's definitely a contender. GotD was so good because a) Davros (Michael Wisher was superb), b) the subject matter and the subtext of the Nazis and c) what it came to mean in the context of the Time War. HN/FoB has to be at least a Top 5 story, I think.

Family of Blood just screened over here - brilliant! No spoilers but more sacrificial/ kenotic/ incarnational images/eternal punishment. I have to admit to shedding a tear at the final scene
