    The Empty Hand of Faith – Vintage


    “Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness . . . For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants.”

    The single most amazing truth about the Gospel of Jesus Christ is this: it is all of grace. It is the work of God, not of man. It is the story of a powerful Savior who redeems His people, and He does so completely. It is about a sovereign God, a perfect Savior, and an accomplished redemption.

    In the above quoted Scripture we hear the very message of life itself. We first hear about our inability: if we think we can “work” to gain something from God, we do not understand how truly lost we are. The one who works receives only his wages, not righteousness. But to the one who does not come to God with any idea of merit or earning, but instead trusts in the God who justifies the ungodly, that kind of faith is reckoned to him as righteousness. It is a faith that comes with empty hand, claiming nothing for itself, but seeking its all in Christ. This empty-handed faith is the kind of faith that results in a right standing with God.

    Next we hear about God’s ability: since faith comes with empty hand, it finds in the grace of God all that it could ever need or want. God’s grace is powerful, and it brings full salvation to the soul of the person who despairs of anything other than free, unmerited grace. Grace cannot clasp the hand that carries within it ideas of merit, or good works, or any other kind of human addition to grace. “But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace” (Romans 11:6). God’s wondrous grace cannot be mixed with human merit. The hand that holds onto its own alleged goodness, or attempts to sneak in a merit here, a good work there, will not find the open hand of God’s grace. Only the empty hand fits into the powerful hand of grace. Only the person who finds in Christ his all-in-all will, in so finding, be made right with God. This is why the Scriptures say it is by faith so that it might be in accordance with grace: in God’s wisdom, he excludes man’s boasting by making salvation all of grace.

    Finally, we see the certainty of salvation: because God saves by His all-powerful and undeserved mercy and grace, the promise of salvation is “guaranteed” or made firm and unmovable to everyone who extends that empty but believing hand to His all powerful and sovereign grace. If salvation was in the least bit dependent upon the sinner, the promise could never be thought of as firm and unmovable. But since faith brings no idea of self-worth with it, and since grace is by definition free and unmerited, then salvation itself is wholly the work of God (1 Corinthians 1:30-31), and hence it is certain, firm and can be “guaranteed.” Only salvation that is God’s work in its totality can fit this description.

    My friend, do you have the kind of righteousness that Paul spoke of in Philippians 3:9, cited above? Or do you have a standing before God that is based upon what you do, rather than upon what Christ has done in your place? Can you understand why a true Christian cannot help but stand in wonder at these words: “Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not impute to him” (Romans 4:8)? Have your sins been imputed to Christ, and His righteousness imputed to you by faith? Do you know what it means to have Christ not merely as Savior in name, but in fact, so that your entire trust is in Him and in nothing you can ever do? Can you honestly say you trust Him with your eternal destiny, and fully believe He carried your sins on the cross, and has given His righteousness to you, so that you can stand before the holy God? It is my prayer that if you cannot claim Christ in this way, you will give consideration to these truths, and God will be merciful toward you so as to grant you true faith to embrace His gospel. May God richly bless you as you seek His truth.

    Remember this; or you may fall into error by fixing your minds so much upon the faith which is the channel of salvation as to forget the grace which is the fountain and source even of faith itself. Faith is the work of God’s grace in us. . .”No man comes to me,” says Jesus, “except the Father who sent me draws him.” So that faith, which is coming to Christ, is the result of divine drawing. Grace is the first and last moving cause of salvation; and faith, essential as it is, is only an important part of the machinery which grace employs. We are saved “through faith,” but salvation is “by grace.” Sound forth those words as with the archangel’s trumpet: “By grace are you saved.” What glad tidings for the undeserving!

    Only some people believe it.

    The others go to the Hell not because any sin is left unatoned, but because they don't believe the full atonement.

    You cannot hold to biblical inerrancy and hold the position you hold. Do you hold to biblical inerrancy? Again, Ephesians clearly states that we are not saved by works, but by grace that comes to us through faith. By that rationale, faith cannot be consider a work in the biblical sense, yet you steadfastly maintain that it is. So which is it? Is your position correct and the Bible is wrong?

    I feel like I'm repeating myself over and over again, I'll say it once more, faith is believing, believing is an action a verb an act of man a work of man, that's why Grace has to come first, no grace no faith.

    That's confusion to me, how do five sola's equal one sola, all five claim to be one but five can't be one.:BangHead:

    My answer is that there can only be one sola when it comes to salvation, and that's Grace. :jesus:

    You're still only addressing half the issue. Ephesians 2:8-9 does not separate grace from faith in the matter of salvation. In fact, in inextricably links them so that both are required to confirm our salvation. Paul informs the Ephesian church that their salvation does not come to them by their own works, but through grace that comes to them through their faith. You say "no grace no faith," but the inverse is true as well: "no faith, no grace."

    Paul goes on to tell the Romans that faith comes by hearing the preached word. All of this stands directly in opposition to this stubborn stance that faith is a work. It cannot possibly be a work and yet lead to salvation. For that to be the case then Paul has to be wrong. Yet Paul tells us that scripture is inspired and profitable for all mankind.

    Sola Scriptura: The Scripture Alone is the Standard
    Our salvation is from the Bible. The Bible is our only rule of faith and order. It is not Calvin; Arminius, Augustine, Spurgeon, or any other man. The Bible itself is our authority. It and it alone will define what the gospel is; what our "faith", that is, our beliefs are.

    Jud 1:3 Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.

    Gal 1:6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
    Gal 1:7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
    Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

    Solo Christo! By Christ's Work Alone are We Saved
    --Our faith is in Christ and His work alone.
    When he died on the cross he said "It is finished." The price was paid. There is nothing you or I can do to add to the price that he paid. It is in him and him alone that we find salvation.

    Sola Gratia: Salvation by Grace Alone
    --Everything we have is by the grace of God. When are thoughts are turned to the salvation that Christ provided, He didn't have to die. It was out of the grace of God that he died for us when we didn't deserve it. Everything we have is by the grace of God.

    Sola Fide:
    Salvation is a free gift. It is available by faith. Romans 5:1: We are justified by faith.
    Throughout the Scriptures, over and over again we are commanded to believe. "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.
    Jesus has accomplished salvation on the cross. That is grace.
    We need to accept that salvation by faith. It is His gift to us.

    Soli Deo Gloria! For the Glory of God Alone
    --Having said all of that, whatever we do, we do to the glory of God.
    God created us; He created us for his glory.

    We are saved in Christ alone by grace alone through faith alone, the message being from only the Bible, and our lives being only for the glory of God.

    Just out of curiosity, where do you stand on the doctrine of the Trinity? After all, there are three members of the Godhead, yet there is only one God. If "five can't be one," then surely you also believe that "three can't be one," right? Just curious...

    I realize that sounds snarkier than I intended, and I apologize. I'm just trying to get a read on your theological bend, RW. You claim not to be Calvinist, yet much of your doctrinal stances (as gathered from your post) speak very much to a Calvinist mindset.

    Tony, I sure hope you are kidding, I am a Trinitarian even though I can't fully wrap my mind around it or fully understand it, but five sola's written by man will be fully understood as I pray and study, actually I already have. :) I get off the fence and come to conclusions as I study scripture, scripture is my final authority. :)

    No matter how you understand it, Grace has to come first, without grace man would not embrace the gospel by faith.

    Of course grace comes first. Calvinists decry the prevenient grace that Arminians teach but many don't realize that Calvin taught "common grace" which is close to prevenient grace. Now I'm not calling you a Calvinist since you do not wish to be known as such, just putting forth these positions.

    I would basically agree with your statement that I highlighted. While I do think that we use our God-given reason and experience with which to view scripture, I believe these must line up with what the scriptures teach. If they don't, I think we cannot regard them as coming from God.

    Yeah most Calvinists believe in common grace (after all it's what scriptures teach) but that prevenient grace thing is what's wrong. Any grace, in relation to salvation, that the bible teaches is that which always leads to salvation. I don't know of any biblical evidence of a grace that merely enables salvation (after all that's the doctrine of prevenient grace, it enables not ensures). Saving grace ensures salvation.

    The point is:
    I was not able to accept Christ as my Saviour until I first accepted the Scriptures as God's Word. I must accept the message as true and inspired or infallible before I can be saved.
    This was not only true of myself, but becomes especially true when witnessing to people of other religions like Muslims. They believe that the Bible is contained within the Koran, and that the one we hold has been changed so many times it has been completely corrupted and totally unreliable. Only the Koran is reliable. Thus, I first must convince them of the reliability of the Word, or simply use the Word to demonstrate its reliability.

    Let's talk about the verse you gave us that preaches the opposite of what you teach. (1 Co 1:18)

    The ones perishing are the non predestined elect, that's why they understand the things of God to be foolishness. Because they were never chosen before the earth was created they will never be regenerated.

    Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
    Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
    Eph 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
