Should BBC Not Play #1 Song of the Week?

I'd rather they didn't as it's a revolting way of responding to her death. But censoring it would be a political act. Just a point of order as it were: the BBC is not directly controlled by the government; I'm sure David Cameron, who has called it the Bolshevik Broadcasting Corporation in the...

    Margaret Thatcher versus the Scots

Um...she didn't actually say that. A misquote recycled umpteen times does not turn it into a fact. And she didn't alienate everyone: there were many who did very well out of her rule; she rescued the country from near-bankruptcy, broke the power of the union oligarchs who'd held the country to...

    Margaret Thatcher versus the Scots

No, it displays the hate and spite of a small minority.

    The Thatcher Haters

Morissey and his ilk disgust me. You can disagree with her policies without hating the woman.

    Margaret Thatcher versus the Scots

I hope with more dignity than the lefties have here to Thatcher. EW&F, in many respects ironically Britain is less divided now than it was in the 1970s and 1980s; it is far less class-riven now than it was then and the North-South divide is not as bad as it was. We have in exchange a milder...

RCC is NOT a Force for Good

My work computer doesn't have speakers so I can't listen to the clip at the moment but I've heard him fulminate at the mouth about Christianity before and haven't been impressed, despite liking him as Melchet and admiring his generally great intellect.

    Margaret Thatcher versus the Scots

She WAS and continues to be in death, divisive. My own views on her are mixed and we did well out of her rule in 'Y Sowth' in a way that 'Thems Oop North' often didn't. Much as I expect you won't find many fans of The Gipper in the Michigan rust belt towns, you won't find many who carry a torch...

RCC is NOT a Force for Good

He'd be equally trenchant about Baptists, in fact about just about any Christian denomination, with the possible exception of the Quakers. You do know he's a militant atheist, secularist and homosexual, don't you?

Maggie Thacher -- beef and vegetables

Apocryphal: it actually comes from Spitting Image

    "The Chick-A-Fied Church"

Yes and sort of. His wife was Catholic and he certainly wanted more Catholic-type ritual and liturgy in the CofE. But what got the Covenanters up and running was his attempt to turn the Church of Scotland into the Church of England by imposing the CofE's liturgy on the former. Instead, the...

    Margaret Thatcher has died

All the PMs between Churchill and Thatcher have died: Attlee (1967), Eden (1977), Macmillan (1987), Douglas-Home (1995), Wilson (1995), Heath (2005) and Callaghan (2005). She went to Churchill's because he was the wartime leader and therefore for her to go to Thatcher's is a Big Thing.

    Margaret Thatcher has died

The Queen will attend her funeral, the first one she's been to of an ex-PM since Churchill's in 1965.

I think he tried. Didn't end well for him IIRC

    "The Chick-A-Fied Church"

...as promised. Steve is the one on the right in matelot fancy dress; our vicar is on the left (I think he may even have stood a round last night!). It helps that a lot of our guys are either serving or ex-military, I think. Steve for example has given 30+ years of his adult life to the navy...

    "The Chick-A-Fied Church"

The persecution of the Covenanters was as much about Charles "Where's Ma Head" Stuart's desire to have uniformity in his kingdoms as it was to do with matters spiritual. And he was Scottish BTW ... On a lighter note, our men's ministry bade farewell to Steve Martin (not that one!) the head of...

    Margaret Thatcher has died

They're all lightweights in comparison. I can't think of any up-and-coming politicos on either side of The Pond who match Thatcher and Reagan. I think in part that's because the people, reared on a diet of cable TV trash, don't want them. More fool them, then...we get the leaders we deserve.

It had better be a single malt then! And we haven't shot any Calvinists this side of the Pond for nearly 300 years (unless they annoy us in some small way or other).
