I think that Hades refers to the grave in this instance. Before Christ rose from the dead, I don't believe anyone actually went to Heaven, but to "Abraham's Bosom", sort of a holding place. This is where both David and his infant son were during this time.

I agree that the context points to the Messiah. However, I think it also indicates that each of us comes to an age of knowing good from evil. Admittedly, this is a bit of a stretch, and I don't know of any other scriptures that speak of an age of accountability.

While we know some of what the ECF taught, we don't have very complete records. As I understand it, there were different views pretty early on.
